Expanded Afcon, Can Your Country Host 24 African Teams? Prove It. by vankelvin: 10:53pm On Jun 23, 2020 |
AFRICAN COUNTRIES THAT HAVE THE CAPACITY TO HOST THE EXPANDED AFCON TOURNAMENT. The number of participating countries in Africa’s biggest soccer event, the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), was increased from 16 to 24 national teams in 2019. Also significant, the competition, usually hosted in January and February, will be moved to June and July. The decisions were made following recommendations by the continent’s leading football executives and luminaries at a conference hosted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Morocco. A recommendation to play the biennial soccer event only once in four years was rejected. But the big question lingering in the minds of various Stake Holders (African Countries and football people) is the number of African Countries that have the capacity to Host the expanded 24 nations AFCON Tournament which requires at least 6 standard Stadiums, Hotels, good transportation, quality Health Facilities and commitment by the Host Nation and many more. Currently, if you talk about African Countries that have the Capacity, there are few that comes to mind, and they are 1--South Africa (S/A) 2--Egypt (N/A) 3--Morocco (N/A) 4--Algeria (N/A) 5--Nigeria (W/A) 6--Cameroon (C/A) 7--Ghana (W/A) 8-Tunisia (N/A) 9-Cameroon(C/A) Was your Country left out?.. Do your Country have the Capacity? then prove it. |

COVID 19 has really affected the African football calendar. Had it not been Covid 19 --Nigeria would be preparing to host 2021 WAFU Tournament -- Cameroon would be preparing for 2021 AFCON tournament. Hmm, man proposes but God disposes. |

By the way, why do our fellow Africans especially those from East, Central and South always complain about CAF's choice for AFCON tournaments? Most of them are of the opinion that CAF is bias towards West and North African countries whenever countries put in their bid to host the senior tournaments(AFCON). For example, ---Cameroon has been given the right to host 2021 or 2022 tournament( a Central African country) ---Cote Diviore will host the next edition (a West African Country) --- Guinea Bissau has been given the right to also host the next edition right after C.D (a West African country) Questions: Are our brothers and sisters from the other regions justified in their accusations against CAF? Is it not a case of "who is well prepared for a particular tournament"?(in other words who can best host the tournament)? Or CAF should allow every country to host AFCON all because it's a tournament for Africans? |
