Idi Amin once said if you want ranks, go to the Nigerian Army.

After the whites left, there was so much vacancy in not just the military forces but virtually all sectors of the country.

To fill the gaps, officers had to be double and even triple promoted. That was why we had so many young men in power in the early days of our independence.

Someone once to me , the 1966 coup was as a result of 'power in the hands of young bloods'. To an extent, I can't disagree with him.

Muammar Mohammed Abu Minyar Gaddafi of Libya said so not Field Marshal IDI AMIN of Uganda. He was a Colonel in the Libyan Army till his death and he ruled Libya for many years. Please stop misleading people. Thanks

You are right he did nothing for his community other than building the current hospital used for Covid19 testing.

Wow...

This is enough knowledge on how these men got their Ranks back to back.

Though it seems it took shorter years to attain higher ranks than it takes now.

Imagine that it took Abacha 1963 - 1975 (12 years) to attain the rank of a Colonel after he was commissioned.

No need to mention the mods, we are going FP
For others, especially southerners, it took longer years to ascend the ladder of promotion. There's discrimination in the way that northerners were (and are still) favoured for promotion.

Nigeria just managed to get the monies back because he died and couldn't preserve his loot in his absence.

You are just trying to downplay his role in converting that mere health centre Otibhor Okhae to a full fledge federal teaching hospital, that's not fair.

The guy is just bitter. The hospital was built by the Federal government and named Otibhor Okhae which is the name of the mother of Admiral Aikhomu. It was later renamed a federal specialist hospital and now a teaching hospital. It's conception and construction was all because of Aikhomu who was then the second in command.

he didn’t skip a rank but he got promoted almost every 2 years to a new rank because he is a northerner and a favorite - the same rank now that will take a southerner to attain from one level to the other in 6 to 7 years

correction though- december 31 is the last day of the year and on that day in 1983- Sanni Abacha announced the coup at 8pm on FRCN that toppled President Shehu Shagari

on that day, at that time - he was a Brigadier

so how did he become a Major General in 1983?

Nawa for una o.

If ethnicity played a role in promotion, then Abacha would not have needed to go through the ranks. They could have simply given him double promotions.

No igbo man or SS was carried along in all these their double and triple promotions.

We are marginalized in the military
Why not double promote igbo man to catch up with others in the military the same way they are doing to the northerners with quota system and cut off mark of only two (2) to try bridge their educational deficiencies

You people have started with your marginalization nonsense.

There is no secret to promotion anywhere in Nigeria. You have to know top people. The promotion board is evenly represented.

But in the South, we don't know how to help our people. An Igbo general may not even want to look at the applications of his fellow Igbo man. But a Northerner will be running up and down just to make sure the interest if
of his fellow Northerner is served.

That is the difference between the North and South.

We are our own problem down south. We don't love one another.

In the North, knowing how to speak Hausa is enough to get you a lot of love. But here, whether you speak Yoruba or Igbo fluently, it doesn't mean that the person in charge (whether he is even from your village) will help you.

As someone said on here read Max Siollun's soldiers of fortune. Don't stop there, go on and read the second iteration that covers the abacha and OBJ years.

The military guys in this pic reduced our standards. From physical infrastructure to morals, education and outlook. IBB in particular was permissive to 419, trafficking of drugs and what have u.

Nigerian monies could go missing without any alibi or legal trouble. There's always been stealing but with them no excuses were being given anymore.

The military became incompetent and conflicting actions toward the civilian space spurned heavy sectarian/communal violence esp in the north. Boko haram's early beginnings and movements like maitatsine first emerged here. Look back at Yusuf and his doctrine.almost all the key events that drive his logic come from this era of the late 80s and early 90s (zangon kataf, plateau, kano etc)

Today youre on nairaland.. if these guys were here u wouldnt even have a phone line talk less of internet. Them with Abiola(itt) and Siemens installed useless systems for Nigerians for years against the advice of experts from the ministry of comm. Engr Kentebe's biography touches on this. Check it out. I mean u all know David Mark as minister of comm said "poor ppl shouldn't be using phones." Right?

Let's go to the handling of the oil bust in the late 80s. Ibb wholly implemented SAP without tweaking it to local standards. Compare his method to that of Mahathir of Malaysia, a similar country, who ensured living standards never went down and instead tackled capital flight while adhering to some austerity measures.... he thought about his people first.... and u wonder why IBB and his cronies were given free rein to deposit money in France and switzerland them. Ever wonder why Bnp Paribas is quick to fund the endeavors of a particular IBB associate who is a top business mogul today Some of u know what Im saying.

Read seth apati's 'Nigerian banking sector reforms' and Tom Forrest's 'advance of african capital'.

Finally, NGR was just a measly 40 billion usd economy under these guys. Media healthcare manufacturing etc were all dead. Who here knows that dangote owned a bank once, adenuga etc. All major businessmen.... cos they all made capital from thin air using forex arbitrage. Banking license gave u right for forex allocation and u flipped it on the black market... well u just had to have a general on board.

All the while, manufacturing and agric were dying from lack of capital..... the death of the real sector was cemented under IBB. When u leave school and dont have any jobs except oil to chase, this is what caused it.

This 500 billion usd gdp naija ure seeing is literally a miracle from the perspective of someone who was under these ppl. If insta existed then and we could compare the trajectory of middle class standards one would see a drastic change of quality. These men were callous.

why are you talking like a kid
maybe you are indeed a kid

if your fellow northern officer who left NDA with you started your careers as 2nd Lieutenants

and you became a full lieutenant after 4 year while the northerner became a full lieutenant after 2 years

and and then he became a captain after 2 years - while you were celebrating being a full lieutenant with 2 stars he was celebrating being a captain with 3 stars - is that not already double promotion because he is a northerner ?

must a northern officer jump from second lieutenant to captain for you to know he career is being fast tracked because of quota system and favoritism?

think about this

Abacha died as a full star General in 1998 - and by 1990 ( which is different from the information you are presenting here) he and Babangida were already 4 star Generals - (IBB became a 4 star General in 1988 he skipped the rank of Lt. General) and Abacha became a 4 star General in 1990) and Abacha is the first officer of the Nigerian Army who became a 4 star General without being a military head of state

MY QUESTION TO YOU IS HOW OLD WAS ABACHA WHEN HE BECAME A FULL GENERAL IN 1990?

He was 46 years old in 1990

How many 46 years old southern officers were even Colonels in the Nigerian Army then in the 1990’s?

bro, the army was bastardized by Yakubu Gowon who promoted himself from Lt Col to Major General in 1967 skipping the ranks of Colonel and Brigadier and Murtala Mohammed did same in 1976 promoting himself from Brigadier to full star General skipping Major General and Lieutenant General

Abacha did not merit all that fast track promotion - it was northern favoritism!

Then, why are you blaming the North if you claim that Gowon bastardized the promotion scheme?

How old was Aguiyi Ironsi when he became GOC?

in 1966 - was Gowon not considered a northerner ? do you know what the map of Nigeria looked like as of July 29 1966?

Talking about Aguiyi Ironsi, don’t mention that man in the same sentence as Sanni Abacha in terms of military achievement

do you know Aguiyi Ironsi served in the congo as a peace keeping force commander? have you read that man’s biography of military assignments he participated in ?

apart from being part of successful military coups - which major military operation did Abacha command and received a service star for valor like Aguiyi Ironsi?

you are really a kid if you do not know that in 1966 Gowon was considered a northerner and he was born and stayed all his life in Kaduna - although his parents were originally from plateau state!

it was in 1967 that Benue- Plateau State was created by Gowon and some considered it a middle belt region but they were still considered northerners

Engr Kentebe's book is his biography, 'The Journey of Selfless Telecoms Service'. Kind of a hard find. Really just at bookstores or something. There's a few articles written on it tho. They capture the juice of the story. And for more on the fight between the experts and military interests in the ministry of communications, wikileaks has some info. The cables sent by the then American ambassador are quite revealing.

Max Siollun's books are everywhere in all the stores. You can also find one of his books 'oil politics and violence' online. Read them and ofc balance it out some some personal historiographic critique ( look at newspapers, second opinions and official accounts, the truth is easy to decipher). They are all selfish closed minded folk who entered power by accident. To tell u how low minded they are, think about the fact that after decades of military rule Nigeria still never built an actual military industrial complex. Take some of the figures on military expenditure... billions of USD spent every year for nothing. Imagine as arly as 1980, Shagari was spending 6 billion GBP on the military? ......

The COAS is more poweful, since he has the entire army under his command and reports directly to the C-in-C. The CODS though politically is senior but is very weak. In most of the coups that evolved at the senior officers level in Nigeria, the CODS were operationally handicapped.

joseph1832 You are right. You got the identity of the person on the left. So now I'll tell you about the mad man on the right.

Major General Musa Bamaiyi was the elder brother of Lieutenant General Ishaya Bamaiyi and he was a crazy person. I didn't believe the stories that the soldiers told me until they were made public after Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999.

They told me that General Bamaiyi often drove himself around in mufti and without any bodyguards and that on one occasion policemen stopped him at a checkpoint and tried to extort money from him. When they couldn’t find anything wrong with his car or any reason to detain him further, they asked him for the receipt of an old transistor radio that he had with him. He told them that they were stupid if they expected him to have the receipt of a small radio that he bought decades ago and he dared them to arrest him.

General Bamaiya was once going in his official car, with only his driver and ADC with him, when they came upon the convoy of a state governor (a colonel) with sirens blaring. General Bamaiyi ordered his driver to drive on and not wait for the governor’s convoy. Luckily the governor saw what was happening and ordered his convoy to stop and he came down and saluted as General Bamaiyi drove past.

Due to General Bamaiyi’s inherent madness, General Sani Abacha thought that he was the best person to lead the fight against drug trafficking and so he made him the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). It was during General Bamaiyi’s tenure as chairman that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was arrested for the last time.

The arrest of Fela was a huge shock to many people. He had not been arrested or even bothered in a long time despite the fact that he openly smoked Indian hemp. Some felt that Fela was arrested because an equally crazy person was now in charge of the NDLEA. Then General Bamaiyi appeared on TV and I was surprised by what he said. You would have thought that he would condemn Fela, but he did the opposite. He praised Fela and said that he was one of the icons of Nigeria. However, he said that people that were appealing to him to release Fela should also speak to Fela. He said that the fact that Fela was an icon meant that a lot of young people were looking up to him and might want to emulate him and that Fela’s practice of smoking Indian hemp openly could negatively affect the younger generation. He said that they were not interested in punishing Fela, but rather they wanted to counsel him to consider the effect that he has on the younger generation.

Some people believe that Fela’s experience in detention (c1996) had a negative impact on his health (he was already suffering the effects of HIV/AIDS) and contributed to his death in 1997.

However, the most remarkable demonstration of General Musa Bamaiyi’s craziness occurred because of his feud with his younger brother, Lieutenant General Ishaya Bamaiyi. Now I’ll write a little about Lieutenant General Ishaya Bamaiyi.

Brigadier Ishaya Bamaiyi was the commander of 9th Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment in 1990 when the Orkar Coup occurred. The main battle tanks in Lagos were kept at the Armour Transit Shed at the Ikeja Cantonment at that time. The coupists did not have any armoured vehicles and their plan was to capture the main battle tanks at the Ikeja Cantonment. Therefore, the battle at the Ikeja Cantonment was one of the fiercest on that day. It was so fierce that the officer that had the keys to the Armour Transit Shed changed into mufti, scaled the fence and escaped (he was later court-martialled).

Bamaiyi’s troops were able to break into the Armour Transit Shed and secure the tanks and this was one of the most decisive moments of that day. Bamaiyi’s troops used the main battle tanks to fight off the invaders and then those tanks were deployed at major flash points across Lagos in order to defeat the coupists. The next major battle was at Ikoyi.

Brigadier Bamaiyi led an armoured column from Ikeja to Bonny Camp on Victoria Island. However, the commander at Bonny Camp (I’ve forgotten his name) was very smart. He had heard the explosions at Ikoyi during the night and he ordered his men to celebrate with the coupists and welcome them. When the coupists were securely inside Bonny Camp the soldiers turned on them and disarmed and arrested them. Therefore Bonny Camp was already in government hands when Brigadier Bamaiyi got there.

More troops from Bonny Camp joined Brigadier Bamaiyi’s armoured column and they went down Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, over Falomo Bridge, down Awolowo Road and through Okotie Eboh Street to attack State House at Ribadu Road. The coupists had captured the armoured vehicles (recce vehicles) at State House and Broadcasting House, but those armoured vehicles were no match for Brogadier Bamaiyi’s tanks. Bamaiyi was able to recapture State House and Broadcasting House so that General Abacha could make his broadcast to the nation at 4pm on that day.

Brigadier Bamaiyi’s performance on that day gave a great boost to his career. He subsequently became the commander of the Brigade of Guards from 1990-1992 (he was succeeded by the current minister of defence, General Magashi) , commander Lagos Garrison Command (1993-1996) and then chief of army staff from 1996 onward. It was when General Ishaya Bamaiyi was the chief of army staff and his elder brother was the chairman of the NDLEA that the feud between both brothers reached a crazy level.

Major General Musa Bamaiyi had a serious dispute with his wife. I can’t remember the cause of the dispute, on separate occasions a soldier and an SSS operative told me the cause of the dispute and it was something crazy, but I can’t remember what it was. Anyway, General Bamaiyi abandoned his wife and she was in dire straights. She had no money and no means to take care of herself and she was just abandoned in Lagos. She reached out to General Musa Bamaiyi’s younger brother, the chief of army staff Lieutenant General Ishaya Bamaiyi and he periodically gave her enough money to take care of herself. This infuriated General Musa Bamaiyi. He accused his younger brother of sleeping with his wife!

The feud led to a very dangerous incident during either the Christmas or Easter holidays. General Musa Bamaiyi, who was travelling with his bodyguards, came upon General Ishaya Bamaiyi (who did not have his bodyguards with him) at their village during the holidays. General Musa Bamaiyi ordered his bodyguards to shoot at General Ishaya Bamaiyi, however, remember that General Ishaya Bamaiyi was the chief of army staff and all soldiers owed their loyalty to him, therefore the bodyguards refused to shoot General Ishaya Bamaiyi and instead shot into the air. General Ishaya Bamaiyi escaped and headed to the nearest barracks to raise troops. It took the intervention of senior military officers to defuse the tension.

I didn’t believe this story despite the fact that many security agents told me the exact same story. It was only after 1999, when the feud blew out into the open, that I believed it. General Musa Bamaiyi brought a petition against his younger brother to the Oputa Panel, while General Ishaya Bamaiyi wrote about the feud in his book which was published many years later after his brother had died in 2007.

General Ishaya Bamaiyi said that the most painful thing that ever happened to him in life was when his elder brother accused him of sleeping with his wife. He said that he always knew that his brother hated him but that he didn’t know how bad it was until his brother accused him of sleeping with his wife. His said that his uncle later reminded him that his brother had hated him since they were kids. He said that there was a day that all the uncles were sitting outside with Musa and Ishaya’s father and they saw Ishaya walking past in the distance and their father said that, “This is the son that will take care of me in my old age”. The uncle said that they rebuked their father and told him not to say so, but the father insisted that Ishaya was the son that would take care of him in his old age. He said that if he was about to go out and he told Musa and Ishaya to wait at a place until he got back, only Ishaya would be at that place by the time he got back. The uncle said that Musa was very troublesome when they were kids, while Ishaya was the opposite and this made their parents to prefer Ishaya. The uncle said that the fact that the parents preferred Ishaya really annoyed Musa and that was probably the source of the feud.

General Ishaya Bamaiyi also said that his brother actually campaigned that he should remain in detention when he was arrested and accused of helping the people that assassinated Kudirat Abiola and attempted to assassinate Alex Ibru. Meanwhile, I watched an interview that General Musa Bamaiyi gave when Ishaya Bamaiyi was in prison. The interviewer asked what he was doing to ensure that his brother was released from prison. He replied that he had advised them that it was not possible to fight the government and win. He said that he advised them to get people to go and plead with the government because that was the only way of getting Ishaya out of jail. He said that they didn’t take his advise and that they had a young relative that was a lawyer and that relative was insisting that they battle the charges in the courts and that was the cause of the problems that Ishaya was facing.

Their Sister told a different Story and sided with Musa Bamaiyi . She said power went to Ishaya's head and his family could hardly relate with him anymore and he was addicted to women. It was Musa that dragged Ishaya into the Army when he joined during the Civil war in 1967. Musa was a teacher for many years and Ishaya his younger brother by at least 5 years lived with him while he was in Secondary school.. They were both short service commission Officers .Their father was a Pastor from Zuru.

I am sure those triple and double promotions didn't pass thru the promotions board

They are just political promotions which we demand that the same should be done to us in the SS and SE so as to bridge the gap as was done to the north in education through quota system and minimal cut off mark

I got some of Max Siollun's books on scribd. It was the biography I wantrd some more info on. You have done your homework. That fight between experts and military peeps. I once met one former minister 8if comms who told me that The world bank had to step in. As part of the terms to giving IBB a particular loan, he had to employ a non military communications expert as minidter of communications

So u've even met someone directly involved. These r the minor things that turn out to have major effects on whole industries and ppl's actual quality of life.

I don't know any soldier but you will agree from the write up that those are political promotions and no SS or igbo man was qualified despite being a very academic inclined region.

Aside marginalization
My question is what kind of criteria would they have used that the old SE region couldn't meet

The north use quota system to bridge their academic gap.
Our region needs something like that in the military afterall the people and region holding sway now are not doing well with it and they are still left to continue

We can all remember the exploits of General ihejirika against boko haram when he was in charge
