There was a young man who was once unemployed. He had good grades from school and was always willing to partake in available learning opportunities. Whenever he came across advertised job vacancies, he would apply for them, if he met the requirements to about 60 per cent.

His friends thought the opposite. They felt that if a person does not fully meet the requirements for a job, there was no need to apply. But, the young man had realized a long time ago that he had nothing to lose even if he applied to jobs that were seemingly out of his “reach”.

Soon enough, he decided to apply for a job at a multinational and he was invited for an interview. During the interview, he was so nervous that he couldn’t answer some of the questions asked by the panel. He didn’t get the job, however, he caught the attention of an interview panelist who was impressed by his credentials and his demeanor as well as his obvious straightforward nature.

Few weeks down the line, he received a phone call from another company, inviting him for a test-based examination for a possible role in his chosen career. He was elated and honored the invite. He later found out that he got the invite based on the recommendation of one of the panelists at the other interview he attended weeks back.

Now imagine if he had decided not to apply for that job at the multinational because he did not meet 100 per cent of the requirements? He wouldn’t have met the panelist who recommended him for the other job he got!

You should understand that all the actions you take are chains that could lead you to a destination you have been longing to reach. So, why are you stopping yourself from taking needed steps just because of your own fears and perceived limitations?

Our advice? Apply for everything that you meet requirements for, even if it is not a perfect ten. If you can carry out the specifics of the job or opportunity, you must apply for it, and keep applying to available opportunities with a positive mindset.

You never know what will happen. Remember that if you are rejected, no one will take a gun and shoot you. So, what are you waiting for?
