Rape has become a menace to our society and this pitfall has caused a lot of life's to be ruined. An indian Nurse who was raped in a hospital spent 42 years in a coma or vegetative state.

Aruna Ramchandra Shanbaug born 1 June 1948 and died 18 May 2015), was an Indian nurse. Shanbaug was a nurse in the King Edwards Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.

In November 1973, she was assaulted by ward boy, Sohanlal Bhartha Valmiki, of the same hospital while changing her clothes in the hospital basement. Valmiki strangulated Shanbaug with a dog chain around her neck and was said to have raped her in a sodomized manner. This cut off oxygen to her brain, resulting in a brain stem contusion, cervical cord injury, and cortical blindness. She was discovered in the next morning by a cleaner.

She was at that time working as a junior nurse at King Edward Memorial Hospital , Parel , Mumbai, Shanbaug when she was sexually assaulted.

Shanbaug died of pneumonia on 18 May 2015, after being in a persistent vegetative state for nearly 42 years

Sohanlal was caught and convicted for assault and robbery, and he served two concurrent seven-year sentences, being released in 1980. He was not convicted of rape, sexual molestation, or unnatural sexual offense, the last of which could have been punished with life imprisonment.

From the day of the assault till the day she died on May 18, 2015, Aruna could only survive on mashed food. She could not move her hands or legs, could not talk or perform the basic functions of a human being.

Sohanlal was charged with attempted murder and for robbing Aruna's earrings, but not for rape. The police did not take into account that she was sodomized. A trial court sentenced Sohanlal seven years imprisonment. This was reduced to six years because he had already served a year in lock up. He walked out of jail in 1980 and still claims he did not rape Shanbaug.

On May 18, 2015, Shanbaug then 66, died of severe pneumonia. She was on ventilator support in KEM's acute care unit.

After her death the KEM hospital heard a memorial in her name and various coworkers honoured her.

She is indeed a strong woman
