Tinubu has been on Nigeria's political scene since 1999, the year of Nigeria's return to democracy. He is the poster boy of the progressives in Nigeria. He has been playing the the role of a stabilizer and unifying force. Some call him a godfather while others see him as obstacle. However I see him as a shape of what to come: party supremacy.

Most of the the governors that are clamouring for the control of their state party machinery are budding godfathers. They want to call the shots and be loose. They do not want to submit themselves to the party authority. They have succeeded in subduing their various Houses of Assembly and therefore seeking absolute power. And looking at all the states in the be federation, the governors are baby dictators with no check and balance. They are not accountable to anybody. Not even the electorate can call them to order. Consequently they get away with impunity and never deliver on their electoral promises. Impeachment is nothing to them since the Houses of Assembly are under their feet.

An aspiring governorship candidate also has to break the central bank to be able to contest. And with all the spending victory is not certain because all the contenders are equally throwing around money. A lot of unpredictability is therefore in the race to become a governor in Nigeria. In the end it is the electorates that lose.

Asking Tinubu to leave the political scene without studying the secret behind his political success is like throwing away the baby with the bathwater. The gospel of party supremacy being preached by Tinubu should be looked into. It helps in checking party hijacking by moneybags and enhances party cohesion. It also checks unbridled political ambition of individuals.

Ambode bowed to party supremacy and there was peace and harmony. However Obaseki is aiming to become a Godfather too and Edo is in crisis. We can ignore Tinubu but his message ought to be looked into. It is dangerous to have baby dictators all over the federation.

Party supremacy should be carefully studied, improved upon and introduced into our political life. With time it will be refined and work for us. All countries in the world are works in progress.

Another godfather in the making. Those that reject Godfatherism are scheming to become one. I cannot join a group with no manifesto. What is the structure?
