Traffic in some major cities in Nigeria is not to joke with. You would be surprised to know that the time estimate to a location according to Google map is actually times five in reality especially in places like Lagos.

‘’Lagos traffic’’ grin is now a commonly used phrase among commuters on the roads of Lagos

With the rising population, increase in the numbers of cars, bad roads and irresponsibility of some drivers, traffic has become a force to reckon with in Nigeria. Traffic can sometimes cause stress to your mind and it tends to increase aggression among individuals.

Let me highlight some smart ways I believe would help you beat traffic in Nigeria

Leave home early
This is the first and obvious way you need to beat traffic in Nigeria, you need to be a step ahead all the time. Whether you are certain of the traffic situation or not always leave home early. You can not always accurately predict the traffic situation on the road.

Listen to traffic radio broadcasts
Not many people are aware that some radio broadcasting channels give regular update and analysis of the traffic situation in major areas daily. While on the go, tune in to a radio station to get informed of what you are to expect on the road.

Discover alternative routes
Finding out about alternative routes to your destination can sometimes be your saving grace. You can save yourself from spending unnecessary hours in the traffic by discovering alternative routes. Google map can be your guide to help you discover them, but I would suggest you find out about them and confirm if it is still commutable before trying them out.

Download traffic apps
With the advancement in technology, some traffic apps can provide real-time information on the traffic situation in certain places. They are available for download on Google play store, they include Gidi Traffic, Traffic Radio and Traffikator.

Use Public transport as often as possible
There are certain times when the best decision you would make that day is leaving your car at home to use a public transport system. One major cause of traffic is the increasing number of vehicles on roads.

Some public transport systems that are provided by the Nigerian Government are subsidized. You should make use of them as often as possible.

You can be thousand of steps ahead of traffic in Nigeria by ensuring you make proper preparations.

I hope you found this article helpful.
