PRESS RELEASE BY
PROFESSOR FEMI ODEKUNLE,
MEMBER,PRESIDENTIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE AGAINST CORRUPTION (PACAC).

This is a preliminary reaction of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) to the alleged ‘arrest’ of Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Of course, the real information reaching us is that he was only invited to appear before a Panel set up not long ago concerning some alleged memo by Malami, Attorney General and Minister of justice, regarding some alleged malfeasance by Magu, along with nominations for his replacement.

It was just that those sent to invite him for whatever reasons best known to them invited some press along and made it look an arrest. That mischief has been confirmed by some apparent afterthought denial by the DSS that it was not an arrest.

While PACAC has not had a formal meeting on this development, I have discussed with the Chairman and some other members and the following can be considered as PACAC’s preliminary reaction to this development.

1.The alleged originating Malami memo, up to the current “arrest “ seems an outcome of power-play by power blocs in the corridors of power in which Malami appears to be an arrow-head or major agent of a power bloc that is not really interested in, or in support of, Buhari’s anti-corruption fight.

i. One can recall the earlier non-confirmation experience of Magu by the 8th Assembly, orchestrated by a power bloc and supported by the DSS ‘Security’ reports.

ii. One can also note the non-resubmission of Magu for confirmation since May, 2019 despite the apparent willingness of the 9th Assembly to consider it this time around.

iii. Furthermore, one must take cognisance of the alleged memo referred to earlier i.e by Malami concerning alleged corrupt practices by Magu, along with his own nominations for Magu’s replacement.

iv. Again, we cannot forget Malami’s demand of certain high profile case files from Magu which the latter has been resisting.

The position of PACAC is that while Magu, or any official of whatever status, must be nailed if found to be corrupt, the President must be careful not to shoot its anti-corruption fight /modest achievements in the foot, and not to forget that EFCC under Magu has been the Administration’s anti-corruption poster-face.

It may not be contestable that Malami has been exploiting his alleged loyalty and closeness to the President for his personal /power bloc agenda.

For, to the best of PACAC’s knowledge and observations, Malami has not manifested any genuine commitment to the anti-corruption fight. Samplers: The nolle- prosequi entered in a case of corruption against Orubebe in relation to alleged malfeasance while Minister of Niger Delta Ministry; his secret meeting with fugitive Maina in Dubai under whatever guise/ excuse; his involvement in the surreptitious reinjection of the same Maina into the Civil Service; his supervision of Obono-Oblas’ kangaroo Asset Recovery outfit which Obono subsequently ran out of the country when exposed by some ICPC investigation; his non-due attention, by design or default, to the P&ID matter since 2015 until it was blown open by humongous financial damage to the country; etc.

Notwithstanding the situation at hand, the hope of PACAC is that the President would wake up to the ongoing shenanigans of power players that are working from the inside against his anti-corruption fight. We are also counting on the experience and dexterity of the new Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari whose loyalty to the President and good of the country cannot be doubted, and we also hope that the demonstrated integrity of retired Justice Salami would carry the day for thoroughness, fairness and justice in the interest of the anti-corruption fight.

Signed
Prof. Femi Odekunle, Member PACAC

If these allegations are true, then the guy should be booted out if office.
. The allegations cannot hold water. They're mere allegations that can be quashed. The only allegation I found heavy is money laundering through a third party which should be substantiated.

Efcc is a useless agency
This is really a trying time for Nigeria & the fight against corruption.
EFCC is not a useless agency. Politicians, civil & public servants who occupied positions of trust are the useless set of human being.

Go & check Nigeria constitution very well, their are adequate laws & provision meant to punish stealing, graft, misappropriation & conversion of government funds & assets into private use. The Nigeria police & judicial officer in the court will scuttle & drag the prosecution process.

Politicians & civil servants don't fear laws again because lawyer will come to their defense & truncate their conviction.

We need EFCC & special Court to try corrupt individuals & agencies alleged to have being involved in corruption.

Most of these allegations are so old as far back as 2016/17.

It might be when Magu realised he would not be confirmed he stepped on toes in the process of trying to get confirmation.

The powers that be let word out that areplacement for Magu was on and Magu panicked and must have made a mistake.

Last last he will walk free , promoted and continue in the Nigerian police.

This is Nigeria.

If at all the allegations are true; who controls the DSS?

What are you expecting to hear? My father? No, it's the president unfortunately for you, u failed to recorgnize it's still 'the president ' who ontrols the DSS when they gave a damming report to National Assembly that led to to him not been confirmed. Now led me come back to your question, I will now respond by saying its not the president that controls the DSS though it's his constitutional responsibility. let me put it in a more subtle way, the president chooses what to control in the DSS and his government at large....thats the corruption the chap is talking about.

Late Monday evening, Sahara reported that the Acting EFCC Chairman, Magu has been detained By Police In Abuja, To Be Returned To Aso Rock Villa For Further Interrogation. In the exclusive publication by SR, .... see http://saharareporters.com/2020/07/06/exclusive-acting-efcc-chairman-magu-detained-police-abuja-be-returned-aso-rock-villa

Meanwhile in the past, despite official reactions denying these claims, Here are 7 allegations Sahara reporters have laid in the past.

1. Magu is currently occupying a residence rented for N40m at N20m per annum paid for by a questionable businessman

2. The EFCC boss furnished the residence at the cost of N43m & the contract was awarded to company owned by same questionable man

3.Magu constantly embarked on official n private trips in company of corrupt folks who are currently being investigated.

4. The EFCC boss flies first class or mosttimes private jets owned by the questionable businessman

5. On 24 June, 2016, Magu flew Emirate airlines first-class to Saudi Arabia to perform lesser hajj at the cost of N2.9m. This is in spite of Mr President’s directive to all public servants to fly economy class.

6. He allegedly transfers funds abroad through a third party.

7. Magu is found guilty of action prejudicial to state security, withholding of EFCC files, sabotage n unauthorised removal of EFCC files.

All these allegedly contained in the DSS report that has repeatedly made the senate decline approving him as the Substantial EFCC principal.

It is important to fight right by law.

There are constitutional protections for an accused person.

These two videos discuss the constitutional rights and safeguards for accused person.

Which of these rights of the EFCC Boss has been observed in breach if the news is to be believed that he was arrested without being invited and held in a cell overnight?

Although it's one and unique, they are all over! The fabric of our society reeks of corruption. And until we individually decide to change for the better, which is more impossible, we are helplessly going south!

Don't be surprise before the end of this year mr. president who happens to occupy the position with a certificate in cow rearing will send this man's name again for confirmation as efcc chairman. To think of it, we haven't heard what they have been doing with the recovered funds. So far, mr. integrity and his e-rat zombies are not complaining, but will point their frustration at Atiku, Dino and Saraki.
