Covenant University, courtesy of three of her final year Mass Communication students, has bagged the Best School of the Year Award at the 2020 Future Creative Leaders Academy Competition organised by Pitcher Festival of Creativity, after the University's representatives aggregated the highest points scored at the event.

The Organizers: The Creating a Better Africa Programme is an initiative of CHINI Africa, Cannes Lions official festival representative in Nigeria and organizers of the Pitcher Festival of Creativity. It was launched in 2019 as part of the Pitcher Festival of Creativity.

The Goal of the Programme is to mobilize the private sector towards greater participation in development projects. Creating a better Africa believes that although governments must continually be held accountable, but only a massive intervention from the private sector can produce the kind of rapid developmental change that we all want to see in the African region.

THE CHALLENGE FOR THE 2020 COMPETITION

According to UNICEF, one in every five of the world’s out-of-school children is in Nigeria and though primary education is officially free and compulsory, about 10.5 million of Nigerian children aged 5-14 years are not in school.

The major reasons for education deprivation in Nigeria are poverty and cultural practices that discourage girls from acquiring formal education in Nigeria. In the most affected parts of northern Nigeria, up to 53.3% of girls are out of school.

THE BRIEF

Create a powerful intervention idea for Creating a Better Africa that addresses the issues responsible for educational marginalization in Nigeria and that will enable more children go to school.

THE ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Students were required to submit An A3 size digital board in JPG format including text (100 words maximum), graphics, images etc. that summarize their work.

The Submission portal closed after 23:59 GMT + 1 on 14 March 2020.

THE VICTORY

On Monday 13th of July 2020, Covenant University announced her victory on her social media platforms as she showered her representatives with encomium.

The winners of the competition can be confirmed on the Pitcher Festival Website.

"The supervising lecturer, Dr Odion Odiboh, was awarded The Best Lecturer of the Year at the Competition, while Ayobami Olajide, emerged the winner of the Second Brief Competition to represent Nigeria at the Dubai Lynx Festival.

Other members of the team include, Jesimiel William and Oreoluwa Sowemimo.

Congratulations for making Department of Mass Communication and Covenant University proud".
