As the Federal Government continues to strengthen Infrastructures in the Transport sector, the Managing Director, Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Chief George Moghalu, says the two jetties in Yanagoa and those in Baro and Onitsha have been constructed. Chief Moghalu made this known while speaking on a live Interview program, ‘State of the Nation’ on Aspheric TV.

Moghalu said: ” As we speak now, the Onitsha River Port is Completed. The Baro river port is completed and the Lokoga River Port is ongoing. The jetties in Yenagoa (one and two) are ready for commissioning. In Ogun State, a new jetty is being constructed. In 2019, we were able to renovate our jetty in Lagos.”

Speaking on the State of Waterways in the country, Moghalu said the agency is doing all to ensure more routes are navigable. “We have about 10,000 kilometers of inland waterways in Nigeria that passes through 26 States of the Federation. But it is about 3,000 that is navigable. It is part of our response to make sure that more of these water ways are navigable all year round.”

The NIWA Boss further commended the Inspector General of Police for the support enjoyed by the Agency and for the ambience of security around the waterway. “I want to thank the Inspector General of Police for the support we have enjoyed from the Police. So far, the security agencies in the country, are giving us the needed support,” Moghalu said.
