How Three Women Have Been Ruling A Federal Constituency Since 1999

There are 360 federal constituencies in Nigeria and one of them is Ayedaade-Irewole-Isokan federal constituency. The constituency is located in Osun West Senatorial District with its headquarters in Ikire, the capital of Irewole Local Government Area.

The constituency comprises three local government areas (Ayedaade, Irewole and Isokan). Since the country returned to democratic rule in 1999 women have been representing the federal constituency in the House of Representatives.

1. Mrs. Patricia Olubunmi Etteh

Mrs. Etteh was first elected as a member of the House of Representatives in 1999 on the platform of Alliance for Democracy (AD). At that time the AD was a vibrant political party.

Mrs. Etteh was elected and she became a member of the House of Representatives representing Ayedaade-Irewole-Isokan federal constituency.

She was reelected in 2003 for another term in office. And she joined the then ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Mrs. Etteh then became a second term member of the lower chamber. She became a close associate of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who supported her for the third time.

Mrs Olubunmi Etteh was elected for the third time in 2007 on the PDP platform. As a third term member, she had enough experience to be the speaker of the House of Representatives. And she was elected in an indoor election.

2. Mrs. Ayo Omidiran

Mrs. Etteh's tenure came to an end in 2011 though she resigned as the Speaker in 2007. She was still in the house till 2011 spending twelve years as a representative of the Ayedaade-Irewole-Isokan federal constituency.

Upon the end of her tenure, Mrs. Ayo Omidiran came in first on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria in 2011. She spent her first term of four years. And the All Progresives Congress (APC) was formed in 2014.

Mrs. Ayo Omidiran sought another term in office as a representative. She contested again, but on the APC platform in 2019. She was reelected to represent the people of the Ayedaade-Irewole-Isokan federal constituency.

Mrs. Omidiran spent eight years in the lower chamber and she was known for what she did on sports. After her second term, the APC didn't give her another ticket.

3. Mrs. Taiwo Oluga

Mrs. Oluga is from Gbongan, the headquarters of Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State.

She jostled for the APC ticket in 2018 to seek the people's mandate in the 2019 general elections. The APC considered the fact that Gbongan had yet to produce a federal lawmaker since the return to democracy in 1999. The party then gave the ticket to Mrs. Taiwo Oluga.

Oluga took part in the 2019 general elections as a candidate for the position of federal law representing the Ayedaade-Irewole-Isokan federal constituency.

Mrs. Oluga won the election and she became a representative. And she is still in that office.

So, since 1999 Mrs. Etteh, Mrs. Omidiran and Mrs. Oluga have been ruling the Ayedaade-Irewole-Isokan federal constituency in the House of Representatives.
