Port Royal... the city once dubbed the "unofficial capital" of Jamaica. It never became official because there was, of course, Spanish Town.

A very informative thread. I Never knew a place like this existed. Unfortunately disaster befell them out of the sheer wickedness of their time just like it did Sodom and Gomorrah. Thanks OP.

I've been reading a lit about slave trade the last week The class system, mulattoes, the free slaves, the executions. History is ugly. .. 40% of slaves taken to Haiti in the 1700's were actually Yoruba.

Haiti became and independent nation by buying their freedom from France. As recently as 1940 they were still paying.. Our colonial masters really did us injustice. They basically set Africa up to fail.

Yet when ordinary Makinde mines one skull at Ijebu, people will start screaming that the world is coming to an end

In fact the world has become safer and more saner than in the past decades and centuries.

World War II gory incidents alone was enough to bring the world to an end, yet the world didn't end.

Your world ends the day you die undecided

Unless I missed it, the article failed to point out one thing: Port Royal was actually built by the Spaniards, who were the ones in control of Jamaica before the English came and threw them out in the 17th century.

Once the English had taken over Port Royal and all other parts of Jamaica from the Spaniards, they pretty much transfered Port Royal to the pirates so that the pirates could be well placed to protect the place from the Spaniards and whilst at it the pirates took to harassing gold and silver-ladened Spanish commercial ships that often plied that route in those years- sometimes, with the approval of the government of England at the time.

Many of the pirates became really rich from the business of robbing Spanish commercial shipping, hence their reckless spending and lifestyle.

Some of those pirates would later go on to hold prominent positions in the Jamaican colonial government. One example was Henry Morgan(mentioned in the article) who later became Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica.

I can bet 50K that Sodom and Gomorrah were situated on an island(s). Regardless of what took place there the cities would still submerge.

Au contraire sir, Africans rather failed themselves because of selfishness and greed. Remember, Europeans colonised, Brazil, Hong kong, Thailand, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malta and the USA too.
