Sexual Harassment is something that happens in Nigeria mostly in our place of work or if you are still young in our schooling environment. It can also happen in your neighbourhood and while it mostly happens to women, some men are also victims of sexual harassment. In our tertiary institutions female students are mostly harassed by male lecturers for sexual favours to pass them and some are even flunked if they refuse to comply with their wishes. Some female students are given carry overs because the lecturer has decided to punish the student until she complies. In the work place managers and people in upper management can hold your promotion or even sack you if you refuse to play ball and comply with their wishes. At least we know its openly practiced in this country but people rarely talk about it. In Nigeria of today we see no evil, we hear no evil, but the evil is being committed. Now lets talk about government and see why i want to fault the nigerian women as their own worst enemy. For the first time in history you have a woman Joy Nunieh an Ex Interim Md of NDDC accusing the Minister of Niger Delta Godswill Akpabio of trying to sexually harass her. You have to understand Godswill Akpabio is not an ordinary man, he was the former governor of Akwa Ibom for 8 years, He was the minority leader in the 8th senate and he is now a serving minister so people like him are rarely told no. This man commands respect and only a few people can stand eye to eye with him and deny him his wishes. I also believe Godswill Akpabio when he said he did not sexually harass Joy Nunieh because she did not let him. He attempted , she rebuffed him and gave him a dirty slap.

People in power find that kind of thing exciting because they usually get their way and it now becomes a challenge to see if you can make the other person adhere to your wishes. To me i expected the minister to be more vocal about the slap, because you can make an advance on a lady and she can take it the wrong way, but for her to come out and say she slapped him and he did not comment on that particular act then something is wrong. Its like saying you tried to sexually harass her, she stopped you by slapping you while assaulting you at that particular moment. Although this fight should be about accountability and the advancement of the Niger delta people, the women should come out to support one of their own because this platform is showing a strong black woman standing up to one of the biggest godfathers in the south south.
Imagine if an Md in the NDDC can be sexually harassed at that level that means no woman in this country is truly safe. Women are the bedrock of this country,When it comes to elections their votes are the deciding factor, we look at them with the motherly eye so we tend to believe them more, so our women should do the needful.

Nothing ventured nothing gained if our women can not unite to make a statement to let everyone know that no matter how highly placed you are in the society our women will no longer tolerate harassment in the work place. Many women going through one form of harassment or the other can know they are not alone. If we can come together for black lives matter in Nigeria for something happening in North America, we can come together to say to no to rape with no means no then lets also try to stop sexual harassment in the work place.
