I firmly believe respect is earned, regardless of people’s age; it should be deemed fit that age is just a number. What you throw at people is exactly what you will get in return; don’t expect a thank you from people after disrespecting them. Respect is a two way street that goes both ways – it’s like a farmer who sows maize and when harvest comes, he will also reap maize. There is no two way about it, what goes around comes back around.
I feel respect is greatly over-rated in Africa and some part of Asia (like Nigeria, Ghana, India, etc.) or at least misunderstood. Respect is treated like something that should be offered up with contrite spirit to those who are elderly to us.
“Respect your children.” That’s not something you hear every day, but it’s something I have been pondering about lately. There is a common saying, “treat others the way you want to be treated.” It applies to more than our friends, siblings, parents and some random stranger…. It also applies to our children too.
