The Federal Government has said that SS3
students may have to sit for the General
Certificate Examinations (GCE) in November if
there is no shift in the timetable of the West
African Examination Council (WAEC).

The Minister of State for Education, Emeka
Nwajiuba, said this during the Presidential
Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing on
Thursday, July 23, in Abuja.

He said if Nigeria cannot convince WAEC
to shift its examinations, sitting for the GCE
may become the only option for Nigerian
students.

He added that if Nigeria is able to meet up
with the WAEC timetable, there is already a
negotiated timeline to move local language
subjects such as Ibo, Hausa and Yoruba
behind to allow all participating countries the
needed time to write the general subjects at
the same time.

Nwajiuba also said the ministry will be
meeting with relevant stakeholders on July 30
to assess preparations towards safe
reopening of schools.

The Minister said: "The Ghanaians will take
examinations peculiar to them. But they are
all in the first part of the time table so we will
work out a domestication module that will
take our peculiar subjects behind after we
have done generals.

"This will buy us the time we need for all of
us to be at par with the rest of West Africa
and operating at the same time because the
unanimity with which WAEC has always
worked is still very important to us.

"Nigeria is not moving away from it, the
option would have been to go to November
to take the GCE external exams. Nigeria is
carefully studying that if in the event
everything fails, we may go to that way."

In a country where there is no interactive learning and continuous assessment of students. Where parents pay school heads and management to help their children cheat in exams. It is will be hard for education to move to the next level in this kind of stagnant situation.

It is a crossroad.

How are they sure sitting for GCE would be possible?? It won't cost anything for these students to write their WAEC, the social distancing will be strictly adhered to since they would be the only ones in the school premises

When it comes to campaign, burial of dignitaries, ceremony of dignitaries the virus disappear it only appears during students exam, something is definitely wrong with this regime, maybe because buhari doesn't have a waec he wants to make sure millions of students will suffer the same faith.

An administration that lacks vision and objectives always act thus. They should keep playing the ostrich with the future of our boisterous youths all because of a pandemic that they have failed to curtailed.

It's obvious this administration has pushed education to the back seat since funding and appropriating for it properly has nosedived with them.


How can you allow economic activities in an open market with barely any regulation to continue whereas schools where there is regulation and the students can be properly goaded remain closed?

This present ministry are not organized, is it not the same procedure for waec they will use for gce. They are big fools, they don't value education at all

Incompetent leaders that kept on toiling with the lives of other people's children.

Their own children will go abroad to study, from creche to tertiary & will come back to Nigeria, to continue ruling where their fathers stopped.

To folks that are clamouring for re-opening schools in 2021, you think FG will immediately open all schools & attend to their needs in January? Then you must be living in Grandiose Delusion.
