Truly, I understand their plight because if medically proven facts and admonitions (as the article above postulates) were sufficient to deter people from smoking we definitely wouldn't have any smokers on earth. But, the forces behind these addictions that lead to the ultimate ruin of human lives/destinies/marriages/careers etc are stronger than what we can combat with self-will or personal effort alone.

My opinion which stems from the word of God is that no one can be free from all addictions and live a life in which everything right is done in moderation without total surrender to the will of God for us. Peace be unto you

I understand where you are coming from.
But I know God has given us the power of self will. He has given to us the power of choice. Everyday of our lives, we are faced with so many "elements" to choose from. Some bring "life" while others bring "death".

To cut my long sermon short, we all have the power to break away from any addiction.
