Twenty-one years after democracy's birth, reasonable is it to expect Africa's most populous nation to have somewhat attained adulthood. Unfortunately, she is stuck in the breastfeeding phase, often wailing for motherly attention which developed countries won't provide. Using David Cameron's popular word, history shows every nation is prone to be "fantastically" selfish. Since our socio-political and economical salvation need to largely come from within, Nigeria's system remains fashioned not to midwife it. Nigeria is not working due to poor quality politics, hence the numerous instabilities and have-nots outnumbering the haves.

Some cerebral, distinguished, well-meaning Nigerians have argued at different times, on different fora, restructuring is the antidote to where we are. No doubt, this would be helpful, as it promises to make the 6 geo-political zones, 36 states more responsible, innovative and productive. But this is not enough! Even when restructuring happens, a lethal cancer is bound to fester, if not treated decisively. Alien to a democratic setting, politics in this clime is controlled by oligarchs, few persons, rather than the people--this order must be upset soonest! They comprise politicians, government officials, wealthy businessmen who work day and night to ensure our political and economic institutions, government policies, bills favor them to the letter, mostly at majority of Nigerians' expense. For instance, inclusion of Nigeria's sovereignty in China loan agreements, House of Representatives investigates this, who benefits most?

Furthermore, political structures in diverse states are literally in their hands. Uncontrolled greed frequently sets in, nudging them to divert millions/billions of naira to their pockets with impunity. Magically, the legislature and judiciary transform from watchdogs to toothless dogs, these oligarchs induce and hold them on the jugular. The honey is too sweet, so carrying this tradition over to a restructured Nigeria is almost inevitable. Today, tens of millions of Nigerians look on powerlessly, despondently, because they can't entirely determine who becomes president, governor, senator, representative, chairman, councillor via the ballot box. Those few men and women know this, invisibly incite violence during elections to perfect their subterfuge and do not care. Poverty, tacky education and health standards, terrorism, continue unabated.

However, to change this narrative, power must return to the masses. In such cases, power is either demanded or taken, not given. Votes of those fishermen in Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, should count in deciding who governs them and would strictly regulate oil companies that smear their waters. Those homeless families in Borno should be able to elect a grand commander-in-chief of Nigeria's armed forces (GCFR) who would appoint more competent service chiefs to make them feel safe again, and so on. This new dawn would usher in leaders who are more accountable to the people than politicians and risk getting either impeached, recalled or losing reelection when they falter.

Finally, for Nigeria to work, INEC, EFCC, ICPC, national and state assemblies, CCB, CAC, CBN, to mention a few, must become much less susceptible and much more formidable to checkmate selfishness of these few persons bent on feathering their nests, even at the cost of welfare of over a hundred million Nigerians now and posterity.

I think President Buhari is heavily tied to apron strings of the "cabal." These few people influence him too easily to act, react in ways that promote their personal interests. At this time, Muhammadu Buhari is not the president Nigeria needs.

Nigeria is an artificial country built around the Niger Delta. It is a marriage of five other geopolitical zones to the ND for the sole purpose of accessing their oyel. It explains so much.

1. It explains corruption : - We vote in our stealing representatives to manage our ND loot and being a loot, the loot it also. It isn't stealing technically because the money isn't ours really. Just a loot we can all lay our hands on and decided to nominate trustworthy thieves from among us to manage without relooting it.

2. It explains nepotism : - It is a logical thing for all men in power to reloot the loot towards their villages and attain hero status there.

3. It explains where civil service is corrupt : - Nobody who understands the motive behind Nigeria will want to watch all the loot relooted while they watch. Most people join in the banquet looting and it means whatever escapes the too looters is faced with another relooting prospects from lower level leaders.

Buhari isn’t at the beck and call of any ‘cabal’! That’s what they would prefer you to believe, so that when things go awry, blame would be deflected on to the ‘cabal’ and he would have a soft landing! Kinda like what happens now when his ministers or other high-ranking appointees mess up, or when another financial/procedural/ethno-religious scandal comes to light; they usually absolve Buhari of blame or give him a soft landing with the excuse that ‘he wasn’t aware’ or ‘it’s the cabals’ fault’!

Buhari and his so called ‘cabal’ are all in cahoots, and i would imagine, would be comparing notes during visits and phone calls to ensure their northernization and islamofacist agenda is on course and meeting set targets!

I disagree. There are, although very few. The issue is most of them seem unwilling to join politics and ones who do are sabotaged by the majority who prefer business as usual.

You forget Nigeria was already a state prior to discovery of crude oil in Oloibiri, Bayelsa State in1956. Lust over wealth in the Niger Delta from then to date is merely an appendage of unchecked greed of most Nigerian politicians, it is not our problem's crux.

Hijacking govt is only possible under the current feudal system that we have in Nigeria, Abuja protects the politicans and corruptions.

Nigeria will only work when leaders don't have Abuja to run to and have to deal locally with the people whether the politicians like it or not. When people start picking their leaders and not like the way Obasanjo was forced on Yoruba by Abuja, leaving Yoruba candidate Olu Falae behind.

We need to stop making this a task too big to achieve. We can do it like the US or Ghana which is more suitable for tribal people.

Yoruba don't have to put up with this atleast for the sake of their children if they love them and care about tomorrow, I guess Yoruba o naa ni omo!

kayceenaz, raising property, estate, vehicular and sales taxes like other resource rich places would solve our problems because whoever steals to build a mansion will have to pay a substantial amount every year to the government.

limiting the use of oil funds to activities that directly affect the Nigerian public such as the provision of healthcare and education just like it is done in Norway and paying other civil servants and public servants from taxes collected from public.

Nigeria needs to be run like any other country, countries are run on taxes and not wishful thinking and emotions.

Nigeria should however have low taxes on incomes and business profits and on food stuff because of the crazy inequalities that presently occur. every other thing from phones to clothes to shoes must be taxed at least at 15 percent just like our neighboring African countries for Nigeria to move forward.

He who pays the piper dictates the tune. If Nigerians are taxed. corruption would definitely stop.
