The greatest mediocre in the history of leaders in this nation is Azikiwe, he was just too ordinary.

Thank you.

Your observation is obvious to all and sundry except the Igbos.

They (Igbos) have this way of blaming others for their own decisions and actions, and neglect all other factors or constraints. This is while they take absolutely no responsibility for their own shortcomings (or how does one explain their obsession with any news, every post and everything Southwest while they ignore their own region?).

It is on record that Awolowo fought tooth and nail to avert and stop the war, and even sat on the fence under intense pressure and monitoring by the northern forces (North and Middlebelt) who clearly outmanned/outgunned the Southwest soldiers. All these, he confided to Ojukwu who clearly understood and exonerated Awolowo after the war.

Actually, the 2 sides (Northern solders and eastern counterparts) were spoiling for a showdown having incurred loses via the coup and counter coup respectively.

As the war progressed, Ojukwu took a gamble with the incursion into the Southwest (and he knew it). The Southwest was going to be made the battlefield, hence Awolowo threw his hat in the ring to save his own people. That’s what leaders do!

So Igbos preferred that yorubaland be made the battlefield and Yorubas died in their millions (instead of Igbos) in a war that belonged to Igbos?

Well, nobody has monopoly of hatred as the Yorubas are very adept at returning fire for fire. So let those who nurse and sow hatred beware!

Have you forgotten Awolowo was a civilian? How do u think he will be able to control soldiers in West? You are comparing a military man Ojukwu with A Lawyer, Awolowo, na wa oo

Bro, stop posting comments with sentiments.

A little study of Nigerian history would have shown you that the Fulanis always rallied against Yorubas using Igbos (1959 Tafawa Balewa with Azikiwe, and 1979 Shehu Shagari with Ekwueme).

Sighs! You guys are so vastly misinformed, and you go about throwing accusations that best describe your people and actions!

proeast:

That is what they fail to understand. Ojukwu knew the odds were stacked against him. However, doing nothing after tens of thousands of our people were massacred in the North in the most heinous manner would have forever made us total slaves in Nigeria. It would have emboldened the North to see the South as conquered territory that will stomach whatever shit they shove down our throats.

Ojukwu showed them that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. That is how it is naturally, otherwise others will subdue you forever.

Yorubas suffered humiliations too considering that Awo was jailed severally for no just reason. Ogundipe was chased away when he was supposed to take over as military head of state. The Western regional governor was killed yet in all these, they never challenged the oppressors.

Even today, the only tribe the Fulanis are wary of is the Igbos, and that is why they're always rallying others against us.

Address the issue rather making empty cliches and ad hominem attacks. Was Awolowo crying over spilled milk or not? Would be be writing this letter of he had supported Aburi Accord or supported Biafran self-determination?

At this stage you should engage in evidence-based argument.

Focus on the issue. Why was Awolowo lamenting on the fake Nigeria he helped in sustaining?

IvarTheBoneless:
Your entire generations past, present and future COMBINED can't measure up to Awolowo's excreta.

That's the bitter truth.

If he as a civilian didn't run away dealt with your coward general to the extent he left 3 million foolish people to be suyalized, how can Awo be the coward ?

I really feel for someone this brainless. Very pathetic.

Why should he support Aburi Accord? Was he there when the decision was made?

Why should he support the Biafran self-determination? Is he an Igbo man?

You igbos should stop declaring everybody that don’t support your cause as your enemy. It is childish and rubbish.

Awo did everything he could do to support his tribe just like Ojukwu did all he could for his people.

If you’re gonna blame anyone, blame Ojukwu for losing the war or hail Ojukwu for fighting the war and leave the Yoruba and Awo our of this.

Last I know, Azikwe was the person that sustained Nigeria in the first place. While the rest of the founding fathers were telling him to input secession clause, Azikwe was busy telling them it’s good we remain one forever and any secession should be treason.

You igbos reap what your ancestors sown.

Stop crying and grow the bleep up!

Abobaku, your coward Awo died a frustrated and miserable man.
Lol, so committing suicide is now a brave act? Only in afonjaland. How would Ojukwu killing himself or surrendering to Nigeria have helped him or Igbos? Do you even know the psychological blow that would have had on Igbos if Ojukwu was captured or if he had killed himself?

Between Awo that slavishly fought for the North yet was humiliated into committing suicide and Ojukwu that went on exile and later returned and died at old age, and was given a state burial?
Lol, miserable Kiki. Need I tell you that his children and grandchildren are going higher. Where are your run away sisi children. They are no where to be found Abi. No wonder ojukwu death was so miserable that he couldn't recognise his children at 78 years. Whereas, so many old men and women at 80, 90 still has their sight and never become senile like ojukwu. The guy started his punishment from earth hehehehe.

Seems the SE guys are being told a lie by their adults and they gladly soak it up otherwise why would they be going around saying pa Awo died by poisoning himself....Awo died in his sleep at Ikenne ogun state and I remembered that very wet morning cos I was on a visit with my cousins to their hometown which was like 20km away from Ikenne and we were all watching the news on TV.

When Awo died, he was given a state burial.....before he was buried after his death, his body was taken round the SW states in a roofless car. Though I was very young, I can still remember encountering the convoy back then along Lagos Ibadan express way when we were traveling.

When Ojukwu died, he wasn't given such an honour as a state burial. He was a trouble maker. Azikwe was a better man with better reasoning which was why he didn't participate actively in the civil war. Seeing that it was an exercise in futility.

Nigeria's situation is bad already but why the lies or have these our SE brothers forgotten that there are two sides to a coin?

My best hobby is thinking and this has led me to discover a lot of things on my own eg better ways of getting a task done easier and faster, whether at the office or at home. Through thinking, I am able to improvise when the appropriate is not available. Through retrospective analysis, I am able to better my present and by extension, the future.

It is this same thinking, which I did in 2009, that made me come to the frank and fearful realization that Nigeria is a damaged product. What led to that conclusion is story for another day. Only yesterday, I stumbled upon one of the letters of the late Sage, Pa Obafemi Awolowo (God bless his soul), who in 1986 penned down a fearful foreboding concerning this nation. It embodies all the trappings that led to my own sad conclusion of 2009.

Here's the letter.

To that request, Awolowo wrote the following:
“Dear Sir,
“I received your letter of February 28, 1986, and sincerely thank you for doing me the honour of inviting me to contribute to the National Political Debate.

“The purpose of the debate is to clarify our thoughts in our search for a new social order.

“It is therefore meet and proper that all those who have something to contribute should do so.

“I do fervently and will continue fervently to pray that I may be proved wrong.

“For something within me tells me, loud and clear, that we have embarked on a fruitless search.

“At the end of the day, when we imagine that the new order is here, we would be terribly disappointed.

“In other words, at the threshold of our New Social Order, we would see for ourselves that, as long as Nigerians remain what they are, nothing clean, principled, ethical, and idealistic can work with them.

“And Nigerians will remain what they are, unless the evils which now dominate their hearts, at all levels and in all sectors of our political, business and governmental activities are exorcised.

“But I venture to assert that they will not be exorcised, and indeed they will be firmly entrenched, unless God Himself imbues a vast majority of us with a revolutionary change of attitude to life and politics or, unless the dialetic processes which have been at work for some twenty years now, perforce, make us perceive the abominable filth that abounds in our society, to the end that an inexorable abhorrence of it will be quickened in our hearts and impel us to make drastic changes for the better.

“There is, of course, an alternative option open to us.
“To succumb to permanent social instability and chaos.
“In the premises, I beg to decline your invitation.
“I am yours truly, Obafemi Awolowo”

Awolowo was a very hopeless and selfish man. He has no reason to complain because he knew from day one that Nigeria has no future and would forever be a disaster, at least his statements about Nigeria being worthless were documented but what did he do when others like Ojukwu realized same and made the bold move to break up the useless contraption? The same Awolowo started giving all manner of excuses on why he couldn't join forces to liberate his people and give them a bright future.

The coward claimed that Northern soldiers were stationed in Lagos and Ibadan thus there is nothing he could do. He even added that if East is allowed to leave Nigeria that they will also be allowed to leave. You see how evil his thought process is? He lacked the guts to call for break-up yet he was willing to rain on the parade of those who risked everything to challenge the status quo against all odds.

Awolowo is a terrible coward and opportunist who contributed a lot albeit due to cowardice in entrenching Nigeria and all its failures and disastrous existence.

Considering his cult-like following in the West, if he had called on his people to fight for Oduduwa or at least not to support Nigeria in the war, it would have gone a long way destabilizing the Northern controlled government. However, he still turned around to join forces with the same people that have always humiliated him to fight against the East in order to entrench the same Nigeria he knew was a disaster and hopeless contraption.

Maybe, if Awolowo had some balls just like Ojukwu, no one would be in this current disaster and hopelessness we have found ourselves in Nigeria. I'm happy he died a shameful death, as a frustrated and sad man, and wasn't even buried with honors despite all he did to support the contraption out of cowardice.

Awolowo is a socialist and a civilian, a socialist will always think of lives first before any other thing. you don't expect him to think like a well trained military man

comparing a Major general with a bloody civilian really speak low of your IQ

you want Yoruba to secession with you yet you killed their leader and exonerate yours? can any tribe entrust their security and safety in your hand?

Yoruba could have lost millions of promising youths just as Igbo lost and still came back to the hopeless Nigeria as you'd called it. you went to war and still returned to Nigeria you got yourself killed

how sensible are you people?
