|Power Book III: Raising Kanan (2021) by 01pudesseld: 9:57am On Aug 02|
It's official, we're not just getting one Power spin-off (Power Book II: Ghost), we'll be getting three! Power Book III: Raising Kanan will come next, then Power: Book IV Influence, before Power Book V: Force. That's a lot of power!
"In television history, only a select few shows have inspired four consecutive series extensions, launched into active production and development at the same time," Jeffrey Hirsch, president and CEO of Starz, said. "These new and exciting chapters will continue the journey of some of Power's most controversial characters while featuring a growing ensemble of complex, distinct characters along with the high-octane drama that set Power in a class of its own."
But what will Power Book III: Raising Kanan involve? Here's everything you need to know.
Power: Raising Kanan release date: When is Power: Raising Kanan out?
We've actually had some pretty solid clues about when to expect Raising Kanan, direct from 50 Cent himself.
"Power Book II will be on in the same time slot as Power. In June it'll be back on," 50 Cent said (via Newsweek). "We've got Power Book III; it's Raising Kanan and that one is in the last stages of casting right now. We're doing that right now, and the third one is in the writers' room – Power Book IV is in the writers' room."
That was in January, so we can expect to see Power: Raising Kanan before the end of the year, or early 2021 at the very latest. Because it's a prequel, with a young cast, they won't want to wait long before casting to shooting to broadcasting.
Power: Raising Kanan plot: What's Power: Raising Kanan about?
The show's a '90s-set prequel, which means we'll follow some of Power's key characters, exploring how their bonds were formed. We'll see the previously-hinted-at backstory between Ghost and Tommy, and we can't wait.
But that's not the only reason to be excited – 50 Cent is creating new songs for the show.
"I created new music specifically for Power Book III," he said. "I've been producing and writing stuff for it because it's hard to find things that feel authentic to that time period. You've got to make this stuff feel like it was produced in the '90s. I'll go get Teddy Riley and producers from that time period to help me produce things."
We'll see if these fresh songs will be music-only, or if some of the themes of the series will be explored lyrically, but either way, it's a cool element of the new show.
Power: Raising Kanan cast: Who is in Power: Raising Kanan?
Chris Sumpter (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) will be playing young Jamie in the show, Ethan Cutkosky (Shameless) will be Young Tommy, and Camila Perez (Gotham) will play young Angie. Patina Miller will play young Raquel Thomas, Kanan's mother. Omar Epps has joined the cast, but we don't yet know who he's playing.
Fans will have to wait and see who'll be portraying the title character – that's yet to be announced. 50 Cent has some fairly large shoes to step into, so we'll watch out for that announcement with interest. As soon as we have news, we'll stick it in this feature, so keep it bookmarked.
If Power: Raising Kanan is airing at the end of the year, we'd expect to see the first proper trailer in October, certainly after Power II: Ghost has finished its first run.
