Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control have given different statistics for the number of COVID-19 cases, recoveries and deaths in the state.
The NCDC statistics is also different in many respects from that supplied by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi.
According to the NCDC statistics dated July 31, 2020 and titled, ‘COVID-19 SITUATION REPORT 154, Friday, 31ST July 2020,” Lagos had 15,121 total confirmed cases, 2,148 discharged cases and 192 deaths.
The report also listed 78 new cases and three newly discharged patients as of July 31, 2020.
Again, NCDC states in the July 31 document that Lagos had 12,781 total active COVID cases.
The NCDC statistics is different from the one stated by Governor Sanwo-Olu for the same time frame, however.
At a Press briefing by Governor Sanwo-Olu on Saturday, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, he was quoted to have said, “As of July 31, Lagos State has had a total of 15,150 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 10,835 persons who had recovered and [had been] discharged.
“We have sadly lost 194 persons to the virus.
“This leaves us with 1,813 active cases in community and 96 under management across various isolation centres in the state.”
The governor spoke at the Lagos House, Marina, on Saturday, August 1, 2020, while addressing Lagosians on the gradual easing of COVID-19 lockdown, NAN reported.
NCDC figures on Lagos’ and other states’ COVID-19 cases as of July 31, 2020
In its Sunday, August 2 update on national COVID-19 cases uploaded at 10:24am on its website, NCDC gave Lagos’ statistics as 15,186 lab confirmed COVID-19 cases, 12,846 as number of cases on admission, 2,148 discharged and 192 deaths.
The NCDC statistics gives Lagos a total of 15,186 out of the national 43,537 total confirmed COVID-19 cases.
In terms of the total number of 20,087 discharged COVID-19 cases nationally, Lagos has discharged 2,148, according to NCDC.
This is nowhere near Sanwo-Olu’s stated 10,835 “recovered and discharged” patients in the state, as NAN had stated.

For the total 883 deaths recorded all over the country according to the NCDC figures, Lagos has 192 — as opposed to Governor Sanwo-Olu’s 194.
Meanwhile, in his last update of July 31 via his verified Twitter handle [@ProfAkinAbayomi], the Lagos Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, noted that as of July 29th, 10,580 COVID-19 patients had recovered in Lagos communities, while 2,200 were discharged from isolation centres within the time frame.

Ninety-four patients were on admission in the state’s isolation centres as of July 29th, with 1,915 active cases being managed at home in the community, says the statistics posted by the health commissioner on his verified Twitter handle.
Lagos Health Commissioner’s tweet dated July 31
He also stated 194 as the number of deaths recorded in the state as of July 29, 2020, as opposed to NCDC’s statistics for COVID-19 deaths in Lagos still put at 192 on Sunday, August 2, 2020.
Lagos Health Commissioner’s tweet dated July 28
Abayomi tweeted the state’s COVID-19 cases as of July 26 as 10,096 recovered patients in the community, 2,154 discharged from its isolation units; 110 persons on admission at the isolation centres, and 193 deaths. The tweet was published on July 28.
Governments of Cross River and Kogi states had also disputed the COVID-19 figures credited for their domains — a situation that had attracted criticisms from the Nigerian Medical Association and the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria.
Recall that sometime in July, the Cross River chapter of the NMA on July 5 embarked on an indefinite strike over alleged failure of the NCDC to reflect the five COVID-19 confirmed cases in the state in its daily situation report since July 1, 2020.
The association had alleged that there were more cases of COVID-19 in the state.
Speaking in an interview with PUNCH HealthWise then, the state’s NMA chairman, Dr. Agam Ayuk, said there were lots of people who presented with symptoms of COVID-19 in the hospital and also in the community — beyond what was captured in the state’s official figures. The doctors withdrew their services as a result.
Dr. Ayuk said, “Our reason for withdrawal of services was because there was under-testing of COVID-19 samples in the state and even when we finally got five confirmed cases using the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control accredited laboratory at the Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, it was still not officially recognised even though that has now been done.
“From our clinical experiences, there are a lot of people who present with symptoms of COVID-19 both in the hospital and in the community, even among health workers.”
The NMA chair, who said there was under-testing for COVID-19 samples in the state, noted that “some of the samples that were collected were not sent to the laboratory, based on the records that we have and what the NCDC published.
“Obviously, there are more than five cases in the state. We have colleagues who have been sick and have recovered, but what hampered their diagnosis was that they were not tested and without laboratory confirmation, you cannot say somebody has COVID-19 irrespective of the symptoms,” Ayuk said.
According to NCDC’s COVID-19 situation report for July 7, 2020, only 12 tests had been carried out in Cross River State since the inception of the pandemic in the country.
“There was under-testing and, of course, without testing, you will not know how well you have performed regarding your preventive measure. That is how to assess how effective and efficient your preventive measures have worked,” Ayuk added.
According to the NCDC, Cross River currently has 45 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 33 on admission in isolation centre, nine discharged cases and three deaths.
Kogi State is credited with five confirmed cases, zero admission case, three discharged patients and two deaths.
Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State continues to dispute the figures, saying the state is COVI-19-free.
The stance of Cross River and Kogi state governments has been condemned by stakeholders, however.
The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria on July 8 expressed concern over the stance taken by the Kogi and the Cross-River State governments in the ongoing fight against COVID-19.
President of MDCAN, Prof. Ken Ozoilo, who addressed a press conference in Jos on Wednesday, said it was unfortunate that while the federal and other state governments were making efforts to contain the spread of the disease in the country, officials of the Kogi and Cross Rivers governments had continued to frustrate the efforts thereby endangering the lives of their citizens.
The President of MDCAN said, “The posture of these two state governments has not only endangered the lives of its citizens but has also put the lives of our members and health workers, in grave danger.
“Reports reaching us from both states indicate that while there is evidence of increasing presentation of patients with clinical features consistent with the diagnosis of COVID-19 disease, agencies of the state government in both places continue to frustrate efforts of the medical personnel to institute testing for the disease.
“Our members in Kogi State have reported increasing numbers of patients with COVID-1- like illnesses especially at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Lokoja. Similar reports are emanating from Cross River State, with the latest figures including staff of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).
“While the Cross Rivers State government has been very lukewarm and unserious in its approach to testing, the Kogi State government has been openly hostile to all efforts to initiate testing. It is crucial to note that testing is a pivotal fulcrum upon which the entire management of the pandemic rests.
“Therefore, the overall control measures involved in the combat of the pandemic in these states are being sabotaged by the respective state governments.”
The MDCAN President called on the Federal Government to prevail on the two states to change their dispositions towards the fight against COVID-19 in the interest of all Nigerians.
It added, “The danger in the attitude of both states is that even if the country succeeds in flattening the COVID-19 curve, Kogi and Cross River States are going to reinfect Nigerians with the disease.
“Therefore, We condemn in very strong terms the attitude of both state governments in their resistance to testing and call on them to, as matter of urgency, change their stance and bring their approach into alignment with the efforts of the rest of the country and to offer their full cooperation to Agencies of the Federal government in the current response efforts.

If the numbers don't add up, its definitely because the truth was never added in the equation. Every lie & scam has an expiry date so it's better for those cashing out to know that Nigerians have moved on. Very soon they will see no one in their isolation centres, and may decide to put mannequins and domestic animals there.

Nigeria will always be a country that is full of dramatic people.
