AFTER WATCHING BBNIJA WHAT’S YOUR FEELING: HAPPY OR SAD, LOVE OR HATE, MOTIVATED OR DEPRESSED?

To mirror down the reality of reality TV shows like bbnija is not the focus of this article. If the light porn scene, the romantic display, the fights, are the result of a heavily scripted behind-the-scene draft, the exact effect of conveying the “reality” in this display paid off. While this obviously put large chunk of morning into the pockets of the producers and of course the housemates, with the instantaneous fame and wealth, the effect on the masses, who seats before the screen with a divided attention between their house chores and the shows, has been obviously not explored. Or at least intentionally not talked of.

The question of what you feel could best be answered by the viewers and die-hard fans of this show. But how you actually feel is usually not self-made. Just like other real occurrences out there in the world- the death of a love one, the divorce of a spouse, an insult by a close colleague- what we do feel is often necessitated by environmental factors. This human tendency is being exploited by the reality TV shows which means that they make you feel what they want you to feel. This is not as bad as you might think. Yet, it might be worse than you ever imagined.

The potency of reality TV shows doing some good could be seen in the show “Naked Beach” aired in Channel 4 which featured participants of different shapes and sizes naked on a beach, by making viewers to embrace their body better and cherish who they are. To drive this home with an exam, a fat woman might begin to feel better after seeing people with her body size on reality TV shows flaunting their bodies and looking happy.
How happy the fat woman inside the TV real is, is a question answerable only by her and or a psychologist, who might know something by direct examination of the person in question. But the fat woman in front of the screen knows nothing of this. What she sees is a happy woman with her type of body.

While the capacity of doing good of that show, Naked Beach, could as well be scrutinizingly questioned, the objectives of other reality shows is always to make us feel what they want us to feel. This keeps them in business and will keep them in business for God knows how long, all to the near drastic consequence of the thousand and millions viewers.

To state a research by Mental Health Foundation is nothing but to conform with the obvious fears. The research says “Almost one-quarter (24 percent) of 18-24 year olds told YouGov that reality TV makes them worry about their body image. Our poll also suggest that the same young people are already more vulnerable than older adults to body-related distress, with nearly one-quarter of them (23) also saying that they had suicidal feelings because of concerns about their bodies.”

Whether you are a Viewer and derives sexual pleasure by secretly observing others engaged in sexual activity as often displayed in bbnija or whether you genuinely believe in the love being displayed there, you must know that your weakness is being exploited. And the long term effect of this psychological manipulation is not always gratifying.

What do you really feel during and after watching the show? Have you ever questioned your own potentials or beauty because of the show? Have you found yourself consciously or unconsciously comparing yourself with one of the housemates? If you have ever asked yourself one of these questions, then is time to part ways with the show.

Whatever you feel, happy or sad, loved or hate, depressed or motivated, perhaps you can do away with the show altogether and find motivation and any of the above mentioned, in the daily occurrence around you whose reality is at least not in question.
