Running a vulnerability scan is not an attack or hacking. It purely information gathering and it is a legitimate activity. People do that everyday, to expose weaknesses in network entities or for research. If It is true that, it was the act of scanning that lead to the DOS on Premium Times website, it means they subscribe to very small IOPS and resources from their hosting provider. Dude, next time at the minimum use tor browser. 1 Like |

OmoOduduwa01: Leave Nigerians and their delusion. Each time a case like this comes up, they would praise the criminals, claiming that in 'saner climes' they would be trained, employed and 'paid heavily', bla, bla, bla...blabbing about how Nigeria kills talents...Truth is, no one in the so called 'saner climes' employs a criminal. Before you get employed in most areas, you go through some form of criminal record check. It could be standard or enhanced disclosure, depending on the sensitivity of the role you're applying for. These provide information about your status with the law. Enhanced Disclosure actually includes even spent convictions and police cautions, warnings, reprimands, even some driving offences. These would automatically disqualify one from many jobs. No one employs a cyber criminal, no matter how skilled, to run their IT system. 1 Like |

dewalexify: There's a world of difference between ethical and criminal hackers. No legitinste organization employs a criminal hacker..it's really simple, can you invest 200 million dollars in a business and hand the IT system over to a known criminal, even if he's as skilled as Bill Gates? 1 Like |
Re: FUTA Student Who Hacked Premium Times Website Suspended By University by fabienjoe: 12:16am On Aug 06, 2020 |
dewalexify: No one does that. A criminal can't be trusted. The mind controls the body..That is really a low level IT activity but even if it's a high skill one, what he does with the skill is controlled by his sick mind.. |

Slawormir: It's a DDOS attack. That means he didn't have to access any of their applications or servers. He just rendered their endpoints unavailable for a while. it's a common type of attack though but he should have been more careful. Simple free VPN, NAT or IP spoofing tricks would have saved him. I guess he was only trying out a newly learnt skill. The university should also find other ways to punish misuse/abuse of resources without stifling learning minds. 4 Likes |

Denial of service attacks are not hacks even niaraland has experienced it countless times peope who run DOS servers are looking for who will use them cos not everyone uses those things and also if premium times upgraded their own servers to filter out those empty request they won't have that problem in the first place |

DDOS attacks don't require any admin credentials. The guy is probably a newbie trying out a new skill he discovered. This kind of attack could be a mild ICMP ping attack and not amplified DDOS. A very skilled attacker with strong intent to destroy premium times would have used zombie bots hosts that are all over social media For premium times website to be susceptible to a ICMP flood attack that could have been prevented with an IPS traffic black hole only shows somebody hasn't been doing his job.
