Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos popularly called UNILAG, has been removed by the governing council of the school.

Ogundipe who has been at loggerheads with the Chairman of the governing council, Mr. Wale Babalakin was sacked at a meeting held recently at the headquarters of the National Universities Commission in Abuja.

According to reports, about 11 council members including Prof. Ogundipe who was accused of financial impropriety and gross misconduct were in attendance.

In an official statement announcing the sack of Prof Ogundipe, the Council, in a statement titled “Notice to the general public on the removal of the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos and signed by the Registrar/ Secretary to the Council, Oladejo Azeez, said Ogundipe was removed from office based on alleged wrongdoing.

The statement read,” The general public is hereby notified that at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, 12th August 2020 and in accordance with the statutory powers vested in it by law, the Governing Council of the University of Lagos removed Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, from office as the Vice-Chancellor of the university with immediate effect.

“The decision was based on Council’s investigations of serious acts of wrongdoing, gross misconduct, financial recklessness and abuse of office against Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS.

Acting on the directive of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the National Universities Commission ordered UNILAG to suspend the convocation till further notice.

Reacting to the removal of Prof. Ogundipe, Chairman, UNILAG chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr. Dele Ashiru, said the Council lacked such powers. “We are following the development. We are aware that the Council relocated to Abuja to meet. The Council does not have the constitutional powers to sack the Vice-Chancellor. We will react appropriately when things become clear,” he said.

The running battle between Prof. Ogundipe/UNILAG Management and the University’s governing council led to the cancellation of the school’s convocation.

Mr. Adamu gave the directive in response to a letter written to the vice-chancellor by the council chairman, accusing Prof. Ogundipe of failing to share important details about the ceremony with the council.
