The world would have been five times more civilised than it is currently. Civillsation was majorly delayed by the Christianization and Islamisation of many parts of the world through killings and wars. Those days, the two major world religions killed people who thought out of the box under the accusation that they were practising witchcraft and heresies. Here is the account of Rhazes who was killed in the Islamic world for being a scientist.

Pivadesh 6: 1-32

1. Now some of those who began to practise core sciences in those days were castrated, blinded, imprisoned and even killed by the religionists such that development and world civilization was delayed.
2. For they were termed witches, wizards, heretics and all kinds of names. And some of them were stabbed to death, stoned to death, set on fire, castrated and treated unjustly by the religious leaders.
3. Now one of those who were killed was Rhazes, son of Zakariya.
4. Rhazes was a male homo sapiens who was born in the 280,860th year of the homo sapiens era, which is also called 860 C.E., in Baghdad which is found in the present day Iraq.
5. Now in those days, Iraq had been possessed by the Muslims who followed the teachings of Mohammed, the man who made the philosophy of Allah (Abd Allah) popular.
6. And the teachings of the western world had been abhorred and forbidden by the imams and the caliphs of those days, saying, let us have nothing to do with the knowledge of the Europeans.
7. Let us go in our own ways, for Allah our god detests the knowledge of the infidels.
8. Now Rhazes saw the ignorance of his people, for he had seen how the world of the Muslims were lacking scientists in the days when the Europeans were waking up to great knowledge.
9. Then Rhazes said, let religion be put to one side and let knowledge be put to another side. For if we do not partake in the emergence of this great body of knowledge, we shall be left far behind.
10. Therefore let us throw away our stereotypic philosophy and follow knowledge. For science is knowledge and enlightenment, but the philosophy of religion is shady and cannot be proven to be true.
11. Now when the clerics heard the words of Rhazes, they plotted his downfall, saying, Rhazes must be put to death for speaking against religion.
12. Now Rhazes fled to Iran, to the house of a great prince who himself loved enlightenment. There he began to make his discoveries in medicine.
13. Now Rhazes studied much word of Hippocrates, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Galen. Then he discovered mysteries in medicine. And his discoveries made him fearless, such that he was poised to return to his land.
14. Then the prince called Ibrahim gave him 500 men, saying, protect Rhazes and see that he settles on a good land in his hometown. Let no hands come upon him. Let not the hands of those who are full of religious dogma touch him.
15. So Rhazes returned to Rayy in company of 500 men who were great fighters.
16. Now when Rhazes was well settled in Baghdad, most of his guards left, returning to the Prince of Iran. Then Rhazes began to write a great book which was called the Continens Liber.
17. Now this book contained many great knowledge of medicine of those days. For the knowledge of the days of Asklepius, Imhotep even to the knowledge of the days of Hippocrates were found in it.
18. Now many who read the book were amazed. And they said, we have not seen a single book which contained as much knowledge as this.
19. Now when the clerics of Islam heard how the book was even more exhalted than the Quran, their holy book, they became very jealous.
20. So they found a way to implicate him. And they said, the book of Rhazes is blasphemous, for the things which the Quran did not expose has been exposed by this book of men.
21. Now Rhazes discussed and made theories for the treatment of some kidney problems. He also explained many things related to the urinary tract. He wrote also about Organic and Inorganic chemistry and also spoke about the treatment of smallpox, chickenpox and many other diseases which the Muslims had earlier ascribed to demons.
22. But the Muslim spoke against his knowledge, saying, there is no true knowledge apart from those which are found in the Quran.
23. Now a Muslim leader named Shuaib gathered fifty men and taught them fiercely, saying, why do you fold your arms and watch, O Muslims?
24. Our own son has perverted the way of truth and he has brought upon us the western knowledge.
25. Let us arise and destroy him. Let us smash his head, according to the dictates of Mohammed and Allah. Let us descend on him in the early hour of the morning.
26. We have kept silent for too long. Now let us bring him down. For we cannot watch our people succumbing to the knowledge of the western world, for this is abomination before Allah our god.
27. So the Muslims attacked Rhazes the son of Zakariyya in his house and found him reading his great book. And the book was very heavy.
28. And one man named Daoud lifted the book and five others lifted other medical and philosophical books which they found in the room and began to hit him all over the head.
29. And the edge of the book struck him on his left eye and on the right eye such that he went blind.
30. And when they saw blood flowing out of his eyes, they fled. So was Rhazes blinded by the Muslims who did not want the knowledge of science.
31. And this caused a great hindrance to the scientific work of Rhazes and to the development of science in the Arabic world in those days.
32. So Rhazes died when he was aged 71, having discovered different chemical compounds such as alcohols and some acids and having written many great books of knowledge which even the Europeans made references to till these days.
