If You're Asked For Any Of These While Job Hunting, Run For Cover! by AbdulAkpan: 4:06am On Aug 21, 2020
We have helped a lot of young professionals avoid falling victim to scammers masquerading as companies and corporations offering employment to thousands out there, while requesting sensitive details. If you are not an avid follower of available data on fake job offers, you may be surprised at the statistics.

According to Advance Africa, there are five different types of fake job search scams. Find details below;

1. An E-mail supposedly from an employer, recruiter, or job board.

2. Fake job adverts on social media.

3. Fake jobs apparently from legitimate employers.

4. Bogus jobs on legitimate job boards.

5. Fake job boards, fake employer websites, and fake recruiter websites.

From our research, we found that a lot of people are involved in executing any or all of the types of fake jobs listed above and apparently, they are making a lot of money from it. It is our job, however, to educate and reach out to more people, so we can reduce the chances of anyone else falling victim to them.

Sometimes, these employment fraudsters ask their potential victims for some details, which could be seen as red flags. Some of them are;

Credit card information – No reasonable employer will ask you for your credit card details after offering you employment. They have no business with that. You might receive a phone call with the caller identifying as a staff member from the company that offered you employment, requesting for your credit card information details. Do not give in!

Money – No matter what, no serious employer will ask a job seeker for money. That is totally unacceptable! If you are currently job hunting, and you come across an ‘offer’ email where the sender is asking you to pay a certain amount of money in order to ‘unlock’ a certain level, please, avoid responding. We once had a Nigerian client who said he got an offer from someone claiming to be a Shell staff, asking him to pay about $300 in order to buy a form to earn him a guaranteed position at Shell. Thankfully, he didn’t fall victim.

Classified Information on Your Past Workplaces – Aside from the valid interview procedure where the recruiter might ask for your role at some of the past places you have worked, you should never divulge sensitive details to anyone, whether online or otherwise, on the places you have worked. If a so-called recruiter sends you an email asking you to give financial information on a company you have worked at previously, please, do not respond.

Your Exact Location – Aside from the fact that some job seekers, write out their full addresses on their CV/resume (which is not advisable), some job scammers who are actual kidnappers, may use one’s social media posts (probably flaunting money or phones or flashy stuff), as a backdrop for sending a ‘juicy job offer’ so as to kidnap the person so as to make money. Never ever give your exact location details to anyone via email or phone call. You can give your state (FCT Abuja, Nigeria) or even district (Wuse, FCT Abuja, Nigeria). Do not give the exact address. A lot of people are online, looking for their next victims!

Read that part again. I wrote that you can write your address, without giving away every detail.

If the job you are applying for is located at Victoria Island, Lagos and you stay on the Island, you can write your address on your CV as;

XYZ Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.

It is absolutely unnecessary to write it as;

Flat 5, Block F, XYZ Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.

No one needs to know your full address, unless they have employed you and you have signed a contractual agreement to that effect.

Those who apply to online jobs a lot need to stop writing their full addresses on their CVs, because no one knows who will see it and if those who see it have evil intentions.

God no go shame us o!

Expected info on addresses include house number, street, city and state. That's more than enough for any kidnapper to know where you live. This is internet age, nothing is hidden again

Only multinationals and multilaterals (US Embassy, International NGOs, PwC, Banks, etc) require such information via an AI generated form. Those are required safe.

My quoted text is referencing job seekers' CVs sent to companies and organizations that do not have an AI database for job applications.

In Nigeria, a lot of CVs end up with Akara or groundnut sellers in the streets.

Do govt jobs have AI database? Yet they love to reach out via letters, calls and emails.

Your address is an essential item on your CV. You cannot stop using the road cos of high rate of accident

Cheers!
