You are partially correct with "Almost 40 years of war". It was about 32 years of war. It took British Empire only 9 months to subdue Oba, Alafin, king and Emir in Nigeria and 30 years to subdue Ndigbo. Please do not be a revisionist like your forbearers. By 1903, the British had made a mice meat of Oba, Alafin, king and Emir in the real estate which later became Republic of Nigeria. However the British colonists were bogged down with war attrition against Ndigbo which did not end until a year to silly amalgamation of northern and southern Protectorates.

It took the British few months to capture the entire yoruba, just a single day to capture Benin Kingdom and exile their Oba after the Oba massacred the British emissaries and few weeks to subdue the entire North with all their emirs. It was reported that the British walked straight to the Sultan of Sokoto because the Emirs were busy fighting themselves while it took the British 32 years and to subdue the Igbos. The British even reported that they were not in full control of Igboland even after 50 years on naming it their colony.
