Mike Okiro battles robbers, kills 2

Newly appointed Acting Inspector General of Police (AIGP), Mike Okiro at the weekend, shocked a family at the Nyanyan area of Abuja being attacked by armed robbers, when he personally responded to their distress call.

The family of Sule Ibrahim were said to have been under the attack of armed robbers, when their guest, who had Okiro’s phone number rang the police chief, who was returning home after an official engagement. The top cop on receiving the call headed straight to the residence of Ibrahim with his escort.

The bandits were unfortunate, as Okiro’s team met them on the spot and engaged them in a shoot-out.

Daily Sun gathered that two of the suspected robbers were shot dead while several others escaped with bullet wounds.

A senior police officer at the Louis Edet House Police Force Headquarters, said: “Oga has instructed that doctors and local bone setters should contact the police when anybody comes for the treatment of bullet wounds.”
Okiro, in a chat said: “There is no news that my team responded to distress call and killed armed robbers. I am an operational police officer. I did it again and again when I was a police commissioner in Lagos.”

He, however, advised parents to caution their children to steer clear of crime, especially armed robbery or get killed.
In his words: “I am warning that the police will no longer tolerate banditry and criminality. Armed robbers should either leave the country or quit robbery. Otherwise they stand the risk of being killed.”

You need not to be a scientist to reform Nigerian police force. It takes a real man and a dedicated leader.

Ehindero would have first called OBJ for an advise before taking an action!

Hi BibB1,
Thanks for this link, but I dare say it is a brilliantly mundane PR stunt by Okiro trying to polish his own image as the new "sheriff in town". Thus the probability of surviving an armed robbery attack is related to whether or not you have Okiro's mobile phone number.
So, was it "Oga" who battled the armed robbers or "his team who engaged them"? and now "Oga is advising parents to warn their children to steer clear of armed robbery"; how else do you want to know a bunch of senior police officers who have no knowledge of crisis in the society or fractured values in the system. I thought Ehindero is going to be the last of the loud-mouthed but actionless cops, Okiro will probably surpass him.
And to Lagos he was referring to, the records of armed robbery and prevalence of 'stray bullets' when he was the Lagos CP is not in support of his claim of being an 'operational police officer'.

thats one thing that annoys me with Nigeria, just because the IG battles robbers, it would become national story, please they should go and sit down jare angry, if they are all doing the right thing would there be armed robbers who go to attack innocent people in their homes. NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT SHOULD GROW UP AND LEARN.
Re: Mike Okiro Battles Robbers, Kills 2 by Mamajama(m): 3:57pm On Jun 19, 2007
ThoniaSlim only fools like BIGB1 will not see the intention behind the useless propaganda. where has OKIRO been for the last 25 years? was he not part of past administration?

its funny how someone had his phone number and called him to be HERO.

This is why i called you BIGB1 TYPICAL HAUSA boy you have no brain at all. still love you.

Even if it was in Spain, US, UK, Togo, Libya or anywhere else, it would have been a big news and it deserves to become national story.
This is positive, an effective method to set example and send messages to the criminals, that there is a new sheriff in town.

I truly do not see anything bad in this latest story.
The problem here is, we are so full of negative vibes toward one another, don't have respect for one another and refuse to recognize the quality or significance of our assiduities as Nigerians.
We whine when the leaders are not doing their jobs and we cry when they are doing their jobs. It is just impossible to make Nigerians happy. And this is why some of the leaders (e.g Ehindero) prefer to be unproductive and steal money, because regardless of the level of one's productivity, Nigerians will forever be unsatisfied.

I mean, this man (Okiro) could have pulled one of Ehindero's moves " He could have pretended as if nothing was wrong or called Mr president for an advise"

We should all learn to appreciate one's effort and give respect when one deserves it.

i hear you, till they start doing the right thing before we start commending, as for the IG's story i have seen nothing special in it to warrant all the fuss.
Re: Mike Okiro Battles Robbers, Kills 2 by Mamajama(m): 4:15pm On Jun 19, 2007

Did he OKIRO personally disengage this criminals or was he in his official car looking out the window? When was the last time he OKIRO touched a gun? I can't recalled seeing any DCP carrying a gun.

It is unnecessary to disparage this story.

I have respect for the man's courage and it will remain so till the content of the story is proven otherwise.

Re: Mike Okiro Battles Robbers, Kills 2 by BlackMamba(m): 6:39pm On Jun 20, 2007
The story of a police chief responding to a crime scene will make a sensational story anywhere in the world. But, it's pathetic that you have to actually place a call to a high ranking police chief to get a swift response to a crime. How about just dialing 911 or the police station, if emergency numbers cannot be installed in Naija?
Mind you this idea of Naija elites calling high ranking police officers, when in distress, is the norm in Naija. An Oga, familiar to me was once raided at home in one of the highbrow areas of Abuja. He called a DIG friend of his before the robbers bored through the wall to gain access to his bedroom. Cops were immediately dispatched to save him and his family. Funny enough the cops waited outside the gate until the robbers left an hour later, because the gate was locked . Of course it was locked by the robbers. The moral of this incidence is that when you call your high ranking police officer friend for help, hope and pray that he personally lead the response team.

Re: Mike Okiro Battles Robbers, Kills 2 by BigB11(m): 6:52pm On Jun 20, 2007
@BlackMamba:

The caller has not been identified, hence you just never know who this individual may be. May be it was a former governor or senator, who knows.

Before down playing this story, it is important to have the full story.
MAMAJAMA on the other hand is just hating; Okiro has done what Ehindero wouldn't do.

New pay coming for police

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, on Wednesday gave policemen something to celebrate when he announced that a new salary structure for the police would soon be unveiled. He has also empowered his lieutenants to promote deserving policemen as against the previous practice where only the office of the IGP did that.

Okiro, who was in Lagos, in continuation of his nationwide tour of police formations, reverted the practise in the police where only the Inspector General could promote, to the old system, whereby commissioners of police could promote their men from constables to corporals and corporals to sergeants.

Also, in the new policy, Assistant Inspectors Generals of Police (AIGs) could promote sergeants to Inspectors as long as they follow procedure, merit and seniority. The move is expected to solve the problem of Policemen who stay too long on one rank beause of boreaucratic bottlenecks.

To prove that there is a reward for professionalism, Okiro gave instant promotion to the Sentries, who impressed him at the Zone 2 command Headquarters and further touched the hearts of his men when he told them that the Federal Government was set to increase police salary and that the children of the 27 cops who died in an autocrash in Benue on June 13 will be trained by the authorities up to university level.

The top cop spoke on corruption, discipline, accommodation, compensation and promotion in the force, as well as crime fighting and investigations. He pledged that good policemen would enjoy during his tenure as he urged bad eggs to "resign now."

He also informed the officers that more arms, ammunition and tear gas were on the way.
Okiro harped on the need for policemen to be disciplined and shun corruption which he said, had become a cankerworm in the force.

His words: "We don’t have the fund and the equipment but that does not mean that we have to be corrupt. Any officer arrested for corruption will be dealt with. If you feel that you are not well paid, leave the force. You can bring your letter of resignation. The money they collect on the road is not for equipment but for their pockets."

While fielding questions from reporters, Okiro said that he would soon move into the controversial official quarters of the Inspector General of Police, in Abuja, which the former police boss, who bought it, had been ordered to vacate.

"I’m still using my DIG accommodation and I’m trying to settle down. I will soon take over the house," he said.

When he left the Zone 2 police headquarters, Okiro visited traditional ruler of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu and the state governor, Babatunde Fashola before he moved to Ogun State to continue his tour.
During his visit to the Government House, Lagos, Governor Babatunde Fashola appealed to Okiro to deploy more policemen to Lagos as well as create additional Area Commands.

Governor Fashola insisted that the population of the state was the double of the census figures released by the National Population Commission (NPC), which put the state population at nine million. He said the state population as conducted by the state census authority was about 18 million, which could not be manned by the 30,000 policemen working in the state> he called for the beef up of sthe Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to combat crime rate in the state.

He attributed the crime wave in the state to the need for more area commands, especially in those areas considered to be more population tensed, listing those areas to include: Akowonjo, Lekki and Ikorodu.
He said, "we plead with you to consider more area commands for the state; at least for a start," noting that areas, like Lekki, Ikorodu and Alimosho have grown tremendously.

He said Lagos was ready to sponsor the number of policemen posted to the state, provided that the police force would oblige the state its request for additional number as well as the creation of more area commands, saying: "Let us adopt certain number of police posted to Lagos State; let us know their number and how to supplement them.

"We are considering life assurance for policemen posted to the state. We shall also take care of their family members in case of eventuality. Our commitment is unwavering.

"We expect more men to strengthen our RRS to battle crime. This is because Lagos State is the window to Nigeria’s safety. If Lagos is secured, Nigeria will be secured."

Fashola advocated the need for the restructuring of the nation’s police system in such a way that the police themselves would begin to think along the line of self-emancipation, a situation he noted would have positive effect on their conduct and subsequently earn them "medals of excellence."

Well, I know it's pretty much too early to judge, but so far Mr Okiro seems to be focused and doing everything correctly.

As recommended earlier, it is very important to polish up the image of Nigerian police and elevate the pride of becoming a police officer.
I think this man is on the right track and wish him all the best.

To lead doesn't require a scientist degree, it's all about commitment, dedication, sincerity and one's state of mind.

Bravo to Okiro!

Another useless media propaganda. This is no new news, the police salary was approved December of 2006 for a 15% increased. up till date the Federal government has not paid this people, so what the hell is Okiro talking about?

This was one of the recommendation presented to the ad-hoc police reformed team headed by RETIRED DIG OSANYANDE and police service commision Minister. Look it up dude.
