Today made it 19 years since American hip hop sensation, Aaliyah passed on. Aaliyah Dana Haughton, nicknamed Babygirl was born on 16 January, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York in the United States of America.

She started her music career at age 10 and was later signed to Jive Records at age 12 where she was introduced to R. Kelly who became her mentor, lead songwriter and producer of her first album 'Age ain't nothing but a number'. The album sold about 3 million copies in the United States alone and was certified double platinum.

She later seperated from R. Kelly due to allegations of illegal marriage and signed with Atlantic Records where she worked with music producers, Timbaland and Missy Elliot for her second album 'One in a Million' which sold about 3 million copies in the United States and about 10 million copies worldwide.
In the year 2000, she starred in her first movie role in the movie 'Romeo must die' . Her song 'Try Again' which was a sound track in the movie, topped the Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay. This makes her the first artist in Billboard history to achieve this feat. She later featured in other movies such as 'Queen of the Damned'

Aaliyah Dana Haughton passed on on August 25, 2001 on a plane crash involving her and 8 other people in the Bahamas after shooting video to her music 'Rock The Boat'

Aaliyah's music have great influence on contemporary R&B, earning her the nicknames, 'Prince of R&B' and 'Queen of Urban Pop'. She left her footsteps in the sand of time.

Her Estate announced they are in talks with record labels to make her music available on streaming platforms. Fans and friends have been paying tribute to the music goddess .
Missy Elliot wrote;
"Your music has always been 10 steps ahead and your sound is still futuristic. Your fashion has always been one of a kind. You rocked your outfits with SWAG and SAUCE! Just know that you are still inspiring generations till this day. We love you".
