The smart question is this...why do these people keep eating shit in public and getting caught when you can eat it in the privacy of your room or bush for long years? And in the appendix, The Fourth Stage, Wole Soyinka further says in the African cosmos, there are four stages or worlds: the world of the unborn, the world of the living, the world of the dead, and the chthonic realm.

Wole Soyinka calls the chthonic realm the home of the tragic spirits. He also says if any member of any of the stages or worlds falls short, he or she falls into the chthonic realm.

This is Wole Soyinka's theory about how African deities like Ogun and Obatala are the patrons of African literature. It is easy for Europeans to dismiss the existence of African literature and to think that the patrons of literature are Greek gods such as Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility and wine. Wole Soyinka in this book shows how the journey of Ogun, the god of wine and fertility, and other gods to reunite with humans, which was fraught with suffering as Ogun needed to clear the thick forest standing as an obstacle, gave birth to African tragedy.

Wole Soyinka using Yorùbá mythology, in his theory of African literature titled Myth, Literature, and the African World: The Fourth Stage, has been able to prove that there is African literature rooted in African myth.
