Playing Jackie Robinson in '42'

In the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, which tells the story of the iconic baseball player who broke racial barriers by being the first African American to play in the majors in the 20th century, Boseman won the lead role at about the same time. Following a return to the dramatic fare with Thurgood (2017), about a case early in Justice Thurgood Marshall's legal career, Boseman was ready for his Black Panther super-hero closeup. The film not only broke box office records upon its release in February 2018, raking domestically in an unprecedented $218 million over the four-day President's Day weekend, it went on to win a Best Picture nomination for the Academy Award.
