Yawning is a natural occurrence amongst man and animal. When we yawn, it is either a sign we feel sleepy, tired, or hungry. We yawn for various reasons, there are no static conditions for yawning. Interestingly, this act is a phenomenon that affects us all.

Notably, yawning is mostly an involuntary process of opening the mouth and breathing in deeply, filling the lungs with air. It’s a very natural response to being tired as we noted earlier. In fact, yawning is typically known to be triggered by sleepiness, fatigue, or contagious yawning. Contagious? You may ask. Yes, of course, yawning can be contagious, if you’ve not noticed this before, try to be observant the next time someone yawns near you.

Research has shown that “a yawn is the body’s method of cooling the brain, by increasing blood flow to it, this process moves heat away and cools the brain. Yawning is a good thing; it is one of the ways we can keep the brain awake and alert.” While some yawns are short, some last for several seconds before an open-mouthed exhale.

Do people yawn excessively?
When we say excessive yawning, this is when a person yawns more than once each minute. This happens often at night once the body feels tired or sleepy. However, excessive yawning at other times may be due to sleep disorder or health conditions. It is advisable to visit your doctor if you notice that your excessive yawning is becoming uncontrollable.

If you are in the middle of a meeting and you seem to be yawning too much, these simple things can save you the embarrassment of an unending yawn. Below are some tips to fight back a yawn and avoid awkward moments for a healthy fella:

Use your nose
Instead of opening your mouth wide to exhale, you can take a deep breath through your nose and exhale through your nose anytime you feel like you are about to yawn. This means that you can have your lips sealed and still have a yawn.

Try something cold
You could either take a cold drink, fruit or eat something cold. How does this work? When a person is tired and dried out, it causes fatigue that can result in yawning. However, cold foods or taking a very chilled drink can reduce or even prevent a yawn by reducing body temperature. You could consider drinking cold beverages, cold water, or any cold drink will you like. Also, eating refrigerated cucumber and melon will help you suppress the desire to yawn.

Reduce temperature
A lower body temperature makes it less likely for you to yawn. According to a 2019 study, “people who wore a cold pack on their neck yawned three times less than those that wore a heating pad on their neck.” If you are yawning and wish to control it, keep your environment cool; the colder the environment, the lesser you yawn. Using something cool against your forehead will help you fight back the urge to yawn.

As we wrap this, it is important to note getting a good night’s sleep or allowing your body to rest can help you replenish and feel energized again thereby reducing or putting an end to frequent yawning.
