Generally, the most important component of a ceramic tile body is clay. Clay is a term for naturally occurring mineral aggregates consisting mainly of the hydrous silicate of alumina.

GLASS SAND:
A special type of sand that is suitable for glass, from window to bottles making, because of its high silica content, and its low content of iron oxide, chromium, cobalt and other colorants. The sand contains about 88 to 99% of silica with a few percentages of iron, titanium, cobalt, and other materials.

IS GLASS MINED?
It is generally mined as industrial, foundry or glass sands with its chemical impurities, size distribution and particle shape dictating end use. Silica sand deposits are most often surface-mined in open pit operations but dredging and underground mining are also used.

SAND GLASS STILL MADE FROM SAND?
Believe it or not, glass is made from liquid sand. You can make glass by heating ordinary sand (which is mostly made of silicon dioxide) until it melts and turns into a liquid. You won't find that happening on your local beach: sand melts at the incredibly high temperature of 1700°C (3090°F).

LOCATIONS:
The major silica sand deposits in the country are located at Ughecll–Delta State, Igbokoda, Ondo State, Baure, Katsina State, Badagry, Lagos State, and along the sandy shore line of the Atlantic, some inland deposit are also reported at Shebu, Plateau State and Ilaro, Ado-Odo, Ogun-water side, Lusada, Obafemi-Owode Ogun State.

• Glass Sand is used in the production of various glass products: which include sheet glasses for windows, bottles, mirrors, optical instruments, chemical apparatus, electrical insulation and condensers, pipe, doors, crucibles, automobile and aircraft bodies.

• In Food and Supplements: Silicon dioxide is also added to many foods and supplements, as a food additive, it serves as an anti-caking agent to avoid clumping.

• In Manufacturing Company: Manufacturers use silica to make everything from glass to cement as it is a major ingredient in cement and used as a pesticide. It is also manufactured for use in toothpaste, because of its hardness; it helps to scrub away plaque on teeth, in its finest form, it is used as functional filler for paints, plastics and rubber.

The answer is yes as Nigeria has extensive deposits of good quartz silica sands. Many of which are associated with the coastal plain of sedimentary areas in the southern part of the country, although deposits also occur in some inland areas. Quartz is silica occurring alone in pure state. Silica/glass sand on the other hand are products of weathering, erosion and transportation by rivers or/and the sea.
