I will start by quoting Edmund Burke where he stated “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Yesterday after a busy day at work I was just on my stroll on nairaland front-page when a particular topic caught my attention I carefully read all the comments and I think it's necessary to create this topic to correct notions identify many issues concerning the market and business related activities and set the record straight.

Alaba international market is a very big market(biggest electronics market in west-africa) even though we have the electrical section, industrial section, fancy and furniture section that is categorised , each of this section of the market have their union leader with a task force set up in over seeing the day to day activities of the Market. The electronics section is splitted into two the IMAE( You get most of the new electronics here and also tokunbo though not major) and is headed by the able leadership of Evangelist Paulinus Ugochukwu( MD sound prince company limited) then the St Peter's axis this where you get most of your tokunbo items.

As a first timer at Alaba you will be approached by a lot of osoafia hustlers some are genuine(looking for their daily bread and hustling to better their lives) while most of them are there to rip you off without conscience now most times they work on your greed, someone will approach you to tell you he will give you a Samsung 32" LED TV for 15k and so many outrageous prices like that if you fall for this first and cheap scam then you are your way to come create more topics about how you were scammed at Alaba.

These scammers and fraudsters have their rings and are connected it's likely you don't escape their bitter pill when you fall in the hand of one of them the best to do is to be wary of their subtle devices. It's worthy to also note that these set of people are both Yoruba and Igbos because it was terribly seeing so many people playing the tribal game and associating a particular tribe to the cheap scam that happens daily, the Yoruba osoafia guy will approach you and poison your mind on why you shouldn't patronise a Igbo guy and with trust you believe him the same thing an Igbo guy will do too(note that are all same ring both the Yoruba and Igbos) their major aim is to rip you off.

I stated earlier that there are task force that handles all the issues concerning each section of the market the main thing is identifying the section you transacted from and go and report immediately , identify the task force chairman it will be easier solving your case.

There are alot of genuine and hardworking traders in the market the same way you can't Cross out the bad guys in such a big market like that(they always have their way round) the only thing is making sure you are observant and detect any shady deals before paying for an item, read the receipt issued to you before signing.

And lastly that an item is tokunbo doesn't mean it should go for an outrageous pricing unless you are buying non tested, some particular item in tokunbo are costlier then the new ones (depending on the country of import and manufacturer).

A submission from a trader at Alaba int'l market Ojo Lagos

All I can understand from your post is that Alaba market is full of scammers disguised as traders and that the task force is only waiting for victims to report rather than getting rid of them from the market.

I vowed never to visit alaba market electronics. Even when you face scammers, you still contend with harassmeent from thugs you call osoafia hustlers. I only buy from lagos Island all my electricals.

Scam is seen in this country as smartness, its now a culture.......make we chop am

Its not particular to any tribe, its a national problem.

There is a popular seller of TVs here who duped me last year. He sold me a bad Tv and shipped it to me, I had to fix it in Abuja and send it back to the village. I have left him to him and his God

When dealing with Nigerians, proceed with caution till further notice, although I have transacted a lot of business here but that was when there was sanity, now things don change.
Bless you. Yet they wonder why tgeir leaders are like that. The malamis and the other looters are only being smart they dont know

Stop spoiling people's businesses , these boys are in every market go computer village they are there go idumota they are there , we the buyers are the ones to be careful , be street wise , remove greedy , buy from established shops , whenever u are scammed in the market check very well u didn't start well , whenever u go computer village , u will see big big shops why try talk with boys along the road if u know u can't handle their games ?

What are you saying? Kindly send links on threads that has been opened about Balogun and Idumota being a fraudulent market. My advice is not for you as it appears you might be a trader in Alaba for all I care. My advice is for any one that has never been to Alaba market. Never attempt to go there to buy anything.

The way I felt that day if it's possible to run a daily advert to stop new people from going to that market I would do it. The same receipt has always been used. Divine Grace Investment. My friend has both used electronics from Lawanson and got home it didn't work as expected and she returned it and collected her money in full no dragging. But in Alaba, the money you just paid now now, see me see you I haven't touched your electronic is none refundable. Anybody calling that a business is a criminal.

A den of criminals and I mean it. There is no way to sugarcoat it. Anything you are buying in that place is at your own RISK!
I am talking from experience. The FEW good traders in that place are and exception and not the rule.

There are sections that specialise in movie PIRACY with active support of the Unions the OP is parroting here. I have been in that market and witnessed a machine mass producing/pirating CDs,DVDs and VCDs at an alarming rate. Will the OP tell me that the so called unions are not aware of this daily crime going on in that place.

There are sections that specialise in inserting fake China engines into Samsung,Panasonic, Toshiba and other major electronics and passing them off as the original product.
There are cheap China generators embossed with trademarks of original Yamaha generators and passed off as originals.
How many activities can one list here. That market is just a sick horrible place to try and transact business.
Caveat emptor ~Enter at your own risk!

You write very well bro. You should comment on here more often.

You have spoken the truth, those so-called Union leaders are not serious about curbing this menace. All they do is pay lip service. Let them continue until no one patronizes Alaba Market again, by then, them go get sense.
I detest awkward reasoning like that.
It's an implicit acknowledgement that d op too has either done that kind of scam in d past or would if he is sure of getting away with it.
Some Yahoo,Yahoo schemes involve fraudsters promising people a percentage cut for just helping them to keep some funds from a phoney contract the fraudster claimed to have secured or come across some hidden funds.
Why have western governments not for a day told the Yahoo victims they are victims of their own greed?
They simply go after the Yahoo fraudster and leave the victim alone, not matter how gullible or greedy they may look on the surface.
But here someone is justifying fraud.
A dealer may even have an old stock of some products and just to dispose of them he sells them off at ridiculously low prices.

Alaba international market is a den of scammers. I don't just know if the whole trader are structured to be mean and wicked irrespective of tribes.

I was first scammed when I decided to get a second hand phone around 2011 or 2012.

A friend we graduated from the same secondary school play a fast one on me in the F-line section (laptop). I had to involve a soldier to help me out although the soldier too punish me later when I couldn't meet his demand.

They are some good people in Alaba too sha just that they are in minority compare to those scammer who already has a well established large network of people into scam.

The market leaders is fully aware that this exist.
They should purge out the trend and not passing the buck to innocent buyers by tagging it on their greed.
