Chief Afe Babalola,the founder, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, , has urged the federal government to barter with the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities with a view to paying their salaries and equipping public universities to make them safe for reopening.
He said private universities had expressed readiness to reopen, noting that a lot of public institutions aren't able to resume.
Babalola, who said COVID-19 has “exposed the unpreparedness of public universities within the areas of poor infrastructures, underfunding, inefficiency and corruption which ASUU had documented and published”, said although he wasn't a fan of ASUU in sight of its penchant for strike actions, the lecturers’ body was on an “understandable strike” this point .
The ABUAD founder, during a statement titled ‘COVID-19: ASUU vindicated on objection to resumption by public universities’ made available in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, said, “From available facts on the ground, COVID-19 has undeniably vindicated ASUU’s position, protests and grievances over the years about lack of necessary facilities, equipment, and decayed infrastructure.

Apart from IPPIS, the condition for safe reopening by ASUU is the provision of necessary health facilities for both students and staff, ensuring that proper distance between students are maintained in the hostels as well as lecture halls!
Has FG attended to the above conditions and are those conditions in the interest of ASUU or public?

we all know that ASUU is more about F.G meeting thier demands and the only way to pass the messga is by the strike and they are jus using covid to make the students and workers of tertiary institutions get used to staying at home...

It's now obvious that we all are damaging the authenticity of education.

Lazy students, Lazy Lecturers and lazy government.

2020 Assessment on Disposition to work.

Market sector. - 99%

Election sector. - 90%

Heath sector. - 100%

Educational sector- 15%

Political sector. -99%

and lot like that.

You will notice out of all sectors only education is not willing to make a turn around.

Out of all these people that have resume back to work, I believe you can visibly see covid patients lying expressly on streets mtchewww abi.
Pls don't be dumb, why are we deceiving ourselves? we can't make progress in Education by being coward.

Even if covid attack students, most likely they are going to recover but what of the elderly lecturers and staff of the Universities that will be interacting with the students, must we not protect them?
If universities reopen and just three professors died in a university, as a result of getting corona, don't you think that will create panick?

First, let us realize that, though ASUU is on strike, ASUU did not close down institutions and hence does not have any power reopening any institution. FG closed down all institutions and have the absolute power to reopen them!
Secondly, I am not comfortable with the word "ASUU demand", I want those demands to be stated out, as most of those " ASUU demands" are not for the benefit of ASUU alone but the whole nation.
I actually think ASUU is a very foolish union for thinking they can get this nation on a right track. Please, go and check the demands of medical doctors and compare with the demands of ASUU, you will discorver that ASUU is trying to turn around Nigeria for good at the expense of their staff welfare and ironically, the masses are not appreciative of it.

These are the demands of ASUU:
1) Revitalization fund for public universities,

2) Earned Academic Allowance,

3) Visitation to universities,

3) Proliferation of state universities

4) Issues of governance in them, and

5) Conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement covered by the 7th February 2019 Memorandum of Action (MOA).

6) IPPIS problem.

If you look carefully at the demands, only items 2 and 6 could be said to concern the welfare of ASUU members directly. ASUU is not talking yet about minimum wage issue nor are they even talking about salary adjustment, which has been due since 2009.

The following are the demands of the Medical Doctors:

1) Immediate payment of the Medical Residency Training funding to all her members, as approved in the revised 2020 budget;

2) Provision of genuine Group Life Insurance and death in service benefits for all health workers;

3) Payment of the outstanding April/May and June COVID-19 inducement allowance to all health workers;

4) Determination of the revised hazard allowance for all health workers, as agreed in previous meetings with relevant stakeholders;

5) Immediate payment of the salary shortfalls of 2014, 2015 and 2016.

6) Doctors working under the various tertiary health institutions to be placed on appropriate salary grade level and universal implementation of the Medical Residency Training Act of 2017 in all state tertiary health institutions;

7) Payment of all arrears owed its members in federal and states tertiary health institutions, arising from the consequential adjustment of the national minimum wage.

https://m.guardian.ng/news/resident-doctors-again-threaten-strike-over-covid-19-hazard-allowance-others/

Look carefully at the seven demands of the Medical Doctors. All seven items directly concerns the welfare of their members!
Did you read anywhere that the doctors want hospitals to be revitalised or that the governments should pay visit to the hospitals or that government should monitor the administration of hospitals?

ASUU is a very stupid union for neglecting the welfare of their members for the progress of a nation that does not want to progress!
My opinion.

Nigerian government is playing "ludo" with the lives of Nigerian youths and the youths themselves are very ignorant!
If FG reopens Universities, NASU, SSANU and NAAT will immediately embark on strike over IPPIS and some other issues, unfortunately, the statement of ASUU concerning reopening is not helping issues because it is only when Universities reopens that the fight of ASUU could be clearly felt by all.
For heaven's sake, ASUU did not close any school and they do not have any power to reopen any school. All the power to close and reopen schools rest on FG, but FG will not reopen because multiple strikes loom as soon as they reopen!
