As I predicted again earlier on another thread the Naira has fallen today again and the price of fuel will have to go up or Buhari will need to start paying subsidy again by Monday ..this announcement is a face saving measure from the embarassment of another fuel increase just one week after the last was done .. well Nigerians should be ready to buy fuel at about 220 before December
And so what? Niger is poorer than us, but they buy petrol 360 per liter

This can't work in Nigeria because marketers will simply form a cartel meeting informally to fix a base price that guarantees 100% markup and then what will PPPRA do about it?

The cbn is most likely to devalue the exchange rate from 380 to either 420 or 450. That is also part of imf conditions for loan.

The current rate is no longer practicable. Last last dollars might even exchange for 500 naira.

True it will definitely be 500 naira by the end of the 4th quarter

Most of you guys are just too dull and never have anything to contribute to discussions once the thread isnt about ethnic rivalry and insults. So, for a very sensitive and important issue as this, you still try to turn it to a Yoruba vs Igbo stuff, because that is the only way characters like you could possibly have any contribution to make- insults.

Attempt to say anything intelligent let's see. I challenge you.

In as much as I think Buhari and his cronies have no clue about running a primary school let alone Nigeria, it is high time government steps out of subsidies and allow free market forces to dictate prices .

All they need to do is set up strong judicial systems, security and then get out of the way of our economic development.

True.

Only problem is, I don't trust the government enough to believe they wont up and announce they've spent xyz again on same subsidy tomorrow.
If that happens, even me will buy wailers form

You should have included that as well.

If I told you that Sweden has no minimum wage would you believe it?

Minimum wages does not alleviate poverty, when you artificially increase minimum wages , small businesses close and more jobs are lost than added to the economy.

What we need is more free markets where ideas and intellectual property rights are protected.

We need the rule of law and the freedom to generate wealth

@Ogododo, can you swear on your life and the life of your kids (born or unborn) that you supported the fuel subsidy removal in January 2012 when pump price jumped from N65 to N142?

Let's even assume you remotely supported the price increase in 2012, what about 2005? Why only in 2012? OBJ also tried stopping fuel subsidy several times (including a week to his handover to Yaradua) but Nigerians rejected it with venom and labelled him all sorts of nasty names for increasing fuel price. That's how we all got to even know the man called Adams Oshiomole cos he was like a national HERO then, always leading the NLC on industrial actions agains fuel price increase and frusyrating OBJ.

Amazing how everyone today now claims they supported subsidy removal and the N65-N142 pump price increase in 2012, but ApC supporters resisted and thwarted it. In fact, anyone who complained of fuel price increase in 2012 was just a hater of GEJ.. There's no madness we wouldn't see in this forum.

If this would ensure the subsidy regime never comes back, so be it. I'm sick and tired of that fraud.

If we must suffer, let it be once and for all. This unending rollercoaster of pains and succour does no one no good.

What makes you think the money saved from paying subsidies will be put to good use? Let's watch our lives in the next one year if there will be improvements?

Nigeria is a failed state.

How will you explain this?

...henceforth free to source for product and fix their price.

ompetition works well if you are producing. That is many players are producing the same products to get market share of a target buying population. This is not the case with the nnpc and downstream.

The allerged players are pre-qualified,selected and they source the product from a producer in competition with other foreign marketers trying to get the same product to their own countries.
the outsourced product is now held by marketers to supply the market for a fee.
if the source goes up the selling price will go up.it does not follow the law of demand and supply at the other end

Look, the difference between Nigeria and all those places is that they enjoy economies of scale where transportation, electricity and haulage is concerned.i.e. they have functional mass transit, power grid & rail. Those three services are the mainstay of any modern economic system.

Nigerian entrepreneurs depend too much on petrol for those three things, if the price fluctuates inflation will go through the roof, because once the price of a consumer good goes up it never comes down.

This latest policy has the potential to kill the Naira completely.

The people deserve some sort of subsidy, annd an important commodity like PMS need to have its price regulated, government must introduce profit ceilings, NNPC knows going rates and other costs, it must still give price ceilings to marketers and petrol pump owners, the government must protect the people...some.tax incentive can also be given, to ensure price stability. The people are entitled to some sort of subsidy, the wealth of the nation is to be enjoyed by the people.
