The Federal Government has indicated plans to completely phase out high concentration of alcohol in sachet and small Polyethylene Terephthalate and glass bottles in the country.

The moves are contained in a statement by the Director-General of the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye on Saturday titled: ‘NAFDAC cautions on alcohol abuse.’

She said, “NAFDAC under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Health, once again, wishes to bring to the attention of the general public, concerns relating to the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in sachets, small volume glass and PET bottles.

“These concerns relate to negative effects of irresponsible alcohol consumption on public health and on the safety and security of the public, alcohol being a toxic and psychoactive substance with dependence producing properties.

“Uncontrolled access and availability of high concentration alcohol in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles has been put forward as a factor contributing to substance and alcohol abuse in Nigeria with its negative impact on the society.

“The World Health Organisation reports that alcohol consumption contributes to three million deaths each year globally as well as to the disabilities and poor health of millions of people.

“NAFDAC with full support of the Federal Ministry of Health has continued to exercise its regulatory responsibilities by ensuring that all alcoholic beverages and other regulated products approved by the agency meet set standards of quality, safety and wholesomeness.

“The Federal Ministry of Health is concerned about the high incidence of substance and alcohol abuse in the country and NAFDAC, being the competent authority and working with relevant stakeholders, is increasing efforts to stem this.

“With regard to alcohol, major stakeholders have been engaged at the highest level and are already sensitised to the issue. To this end, several interventions jointly agreed upon by major stakeholders are being undertaken and as a first step, no new products in sachet and small volume PET or glass bottles above 30 per cent ABV will be registered by NAFDAC.

“Furthermore, to reduce availability and curb abuse, effective January 31 2020, producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume PET and glass bottles are to reduce production by 50 per cent of capacity prior to January 2020. The overall goal is a complete phase out of high concentration alcohol in sachets and small PET and glass bottles in line with the agreed roadmap or earlier.” ,,

If there are no direct severe health implications as a result of the polythene used, the federal government should stay clear! While the consumption of alcohol should be handled by those of age and as such demands regulatory attention, one has to be careful of a fanatical government that seems to take advise from the zealots at MURIC.. Corrupt souls dressed in sanctimonious farcade.. Next, they will ban pork..

Indeed!

This government is imposing an aggressive Islamic cultural assimilation on the entire country.
It should be resisted.

Bad news
Re: FG Bans Alcohol In Satchets, Polythene by LibertyRep: 1:09pm On Sep 13, 2020
They'll still have access to it in bigger bottles which may imply higher consumption and perhaps more abuse.

Except consumption in polythene has any other health implications, this move does not make much sense.

Lol zero joy government... Boys will still buy the big bottles grin.
It's the bikemen and street hustlers I pity. They are the main consumers of the satchet/small sized alcoholic beverages. Looks like another plan to make life harder for the common man. The only source of joy for some in these depressing times is about to be taken away again cheesy
Senseless move from the government I must say. But then, isn't senselessness their signature? Y'all politicians drink Aces of spade, Henny, Dom Perignon and the likes but you wanna take away Baba Wasiu's Regal dry gin/Alomo Bitters. God will judge you grin

Is that what is needed now?
Is this what is most important?
Government is struggling with stimulating and balancing the economy, yet they want to further close/kill businesses that are generating scarce revenue for the economy.
The only source of joy, enjoyment and happiness to the common, poor masses they want to take it away admist the serious economic and social hardship this country is currently experiencing.

The day revolution will happen in this country, it might be sparked by something so small, something like this that they thing has no consequence but greatly affects the common man.

This country right now is without clear cut direction.
May God help us.

Alcohol dissolves everything, especially plastics. So when stire alcohol inside a hatchet, plastic, or something like that, then you're drinking not just alcohol, but some particles of the satchet, which have been known to cause cancer

Too bad, the ministry did a bad job of publicly providing information about this issue.

Thank you for this information. The ban is long overdue. Cote de voire did same long ago. It's hard to feel safe in a public transport as the drivers are nearly all under the influence of alcohol.
