IgbereTV reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Obaseki the winner after polling the highest votes in the election. Obaseki who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and other candidates in the poll.

He praised his his supporters, saying their collective will made the "triumph over godfatherism"

He tweeted:

"Words fail me in saluting our teeming supporters who displayed immense courage in the face of threats, intimidation and brutalization. The collective will of Edo people made it possible for us this triumph over godfatherism. Congratulations to all Edo people. This is our victory!"

INEC declared that Obaseki won 13 local governments out of the 18 local government areas of the state, IgbereTV reports.

The election was contested between Ize-Iyamu and Obaseki. Obaseki polled a total number of 307,955 votes to defeat his main challenger, Ize-Iyamu who scored 223,619 votes. Governor Obaseki was returned elected after polling the highest number of votes in the election.
