Controversy on Thursday trailed the reported attack on the car of Super Eagles star, Obafemi Martins as the authorities of the Lagos State Police Command denied the claim that the international soccer star was in his car that was attacked by bandits in Ajah in the early hours of Tuesday.

Gunmen attacked and rained bullets on Martins’ Mercedes Benz (M500) with registration number BD 900 BDG at a spot close to the Alesh Hotel at about 1am on Tuesday morning.

The soccer star, who did not inform the Nigerian press of his alleged ordeal in the hands of the hoodlums, had told the BBC that he narrowly escaped death in the attack.

But the police said Martins was not in the vehicle when the incident happened, adding that it was his driver, Remi Onipede, and a man, who wanted to assist him procure diesel that were in the car.

According to the report made to the police by Onipede, he and the other man were driving round to buy diesel and when they got to the spot of the attack, they halted to negotiate with some fuel hawkers.

As soon as the vehicle parked, another car reportedly hit it at the back just as Onipede made an attempt to see what was happening.

As he alighted from the vehicle, the bandits shot at him, but the driver managed to remove the ignition key before he escaped.

When the bandits realised that the driver had escaped, they rained bullets on the vehicle, apparently to kill whoever remained in it.

But when they eventually checked the vehicle, they saw nobody in it and there was no key in the ignition to kick-start it. They immediately fled the scene.

The spokesman for the command, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni, who told our correspondent how the incident happened on Thursday, said Onipede was taken to a hospital immediately after he escaped from the scene of attack.

“The driver later called the police from the hospital at 3.30am and officers from the VGC Police Station went to the hospital where they met him and all of them moved to the scene,” Ojajuni said.

The policemen drove the vehicle to their station but later released it to Martins on bond when he appealed to the police that he would like to keep the vehicle in his compound.

The officer in charge of the police station in the area, Mr. B. Mosebolatan, it was learnt, went to Martins’ home at VGC at about 7am on Tuesday.

He was said to have met his mother, Alhaja Martins, who informed him that Martins was still in bed and would not be awake until 10am.

The DPO reportedly left his telephone number with Martins’ mother and asked her to tell her son to call him back.

According to the DPO, the statement given to the police by Martins’ driver did not show that Martins was in the vehicle.

When he was asked the number of persons present in the vehicle at the time of the attack, the driver reportedly told the police that there were two persons in the vehicle.

He also said that Martins was at home and that the second fellow with him was a man he did not know his name, but who only offered to assist him to get diesel.

The police said nobody had been arrested in connection with the attack, as the case was still being investigated.
