How Technology Affect Your Children’s Sleep by Y4all: 9:50am On Sep 23, 2020
Sleep is an essential part of every human, whether young or old. It keeps the body refreshed and helps to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Whenever you think of your wellbeing, bear in mind that it does not concern your feeding alone, your sleep and exercise also play significant roles in your total wellness. The amount of sleep you get as an adult tells on your productivity. Have you wondered what the amount of sleep your children get does to them? Or how it affects them?

What to know
Children need quality sleep to function well and develop properly, however, it turns out that technology is making it pretty difficult for them to maintain a stable healthy life. On average, they need about 10 hours of sleep daily. Just the way a good night’s sleep is necessary for an adult, that is how a proper sleep quality is vital to a child especially at their growing and developmental stage. In recent times, research has shown that “extended use of media devices on a daily basis is not only dramatically raising children’s BMI (Body Mass Index) but leading to daytime inattention, exhaustion and poor quality and duration of sleep.”

The rate at which children are given gadgets this day is soon becoming alarming and therefore calls for parental guardians so that the impact of these devices and even television screens does not cause a deterioration in their health. Please note, there is absolutely nothing wrong with children watching television and even using electronic devices for productive stuff, however, there is a need for proper monitoring and checks. Ensure kids are not overly attached to technology to avoid sleep anxiety, waking up too frequently at night, and low sleep quality. See how your child’s sleep is affected:

Poor sleep quality
The light from gadgets and television is known as blue light. This light has a negative impact on sleep and inversely tells on your child’s health. Studies have shown that “late-night smartphone and tablet usage can not only keep your kids up later and make them sleepless but can also throw off their circadian rhythm, an internal clock that manages sleep cycles.” If your children have not been sleeping well, try to set things right, if they use blue-light gadgets know when to retrieve them to help them lead a healthy life.

Short sleep duration
Technology’s interference in your children’s sleep can cause them to experience shortened sleep hours. This can affect them greatly. Kids need time to exercise, burn energy, and even replenish for them to continue to stay healthy at all times. As earlier suggested, keep an eye and try as much as you can to control their routine.

Addictive tendency
Children have the natural tendency to get addicted to things to excite them. One of the things they can easily become addicted to is their IPad, iPhone, and even electronic games. If you always let them have their way with this gadget, they would become so used to it that even taking it away from them can pose a serious challenge.
Some of them even throw tantrums when they become used to gadgets and you later try to take it from them. Try as much as you can to see that your children don’t get addicted to devices and they never take phones and electronic games with them to bed. Better still, find some replacement activities that they can engage in that would not require them to concentrate on blue rays.
