What is hiccup? Hiccup is derived from the Latin word, “singult,” meaning a gasp.

It happens when the muscles between our chest and abdominal region, called the diaphragm, and the muscles between our ribs, go into involuntary spasm, causing us to breathe or gasp suddenly, against our voice box, making the ‘hic’ sound.

In real sense, there is simply no way to expect hiccups. They happen suddenly and all we can do is drink a lot of clean water in the hopes that they will go away.

Sometimes they do, other times they don’t and causes of hiccups haven’t always been clear. And they are more common in some people while some can go a very long period enjoying a hiccup-free life.

Usually, hiccups are not a serious problem. But they’re repetitive and uncomfortable, causing your whole body to spasm with each hiccup.

Just before the manifestation of that almost wheezing sound that is associated with hiccups, there’s usually a tightening in the chest.

Every episode has a short life span but if it goes beyond 48 hours then it has gone beyond what is normal.

However, when they last longer than this and for up to a month, we call them “persistent” hiccups. Hiccups lasting more than one month are called intractable hiccups.

If in new born babies a little thread is placed on its head to stop hiccup and it works all the time, then a big rope should be placed on the head of an adult and just maybe it will work also. LOL.

What am I even saying because I come and wonder if that simple looking thread placed on a baby to stop hiccup even works at all
