Question: I'm working in an electrical company and I have to do shift duties. I have to give this service for 24 hrs to the public. Could you please explain this matter, whether there's an excuse to miss Friday prayer?

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

The matter of Jumah prayer is of great significance and excellence; leaving it without any legal excuse is a great sin. Ibn Umar and Abu Hurairah heard Allah's Messenger (Peace and blessing be upon him) say on the planks of his pulpit. People must cease to neglect the Friday prayer, or Allah will seal their hearts and then they will be among the negligent". [Reported by Imam Muslim] The Prophet also said: "Whoever neglects praying three consecutive Friday prayers, Allah sets a seal on their hearts".

There are many merits for praying Jumah which are mentioned in many sound Ahadith, such as the Hadith that the Prophet said: "Five prayers and from one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer is an expiation (of the sins committed in between their intervals) if major sins are not committed". [Reported by Imam Muslim] The Command of Allah for hurrying to perform this prayer is a clear evidence to prove its significance. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salât (prayer) on the day of Friday (Jumu'ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allâh [ religious talk (Khutbah) and Salât (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing), that is better for you if you did but know!}[62:9]. 


Therefore, everyone should keep performing Jumah prayer and should not ignore it. Being absent from it is not permissible except if there is a legal exclusion allowed by Sharia. Among such excuses is being busy in accomplishing those works which can not be stopped and society can not do without them, such as work in electricity generation, petrol refineries, etc.

In spite of this fact you should try your best to be present in Jumah prayer. Try to find a non-Muslim supervisor who can replace you at that time or at least agree with your friend to perform Jumah prayer alternately. One week you should go for Jumah and the next week your friend and so on. If you can manage to establish Jumah inside your company, do it even though the number of Muslims is less than forty. Whenever you can not perform Jumah, you should pray four Rakah for Zuhr. Allah knows best.

At this time of Corona that worship places have not been opened, in Ontario Canada, what can one do? The last time we prayed Jumah here was sometime in February. The indoor sports centre we used for jumah is still locked. You have to book a space at one of the several mosques, through an App, for you to get space in one of the three to four Jumah sessions held on Fridays at each mosque and it's always filled up before you know it. Besides, it's damn far away from my house, about 6km.

Try your best to book a space before friday. But if you can't or very inconvinient due to the distance, pray Zuhr at home with its complete for Rakah. Allah knows our heart and reason behind everything we do. And every work shall be judged according to the intention behind it.
