King David was the second king of Israel and Judah of biblical times and he was also one of the most popular characters in the bible. Like so many characters in the bible, there are lots of lessons to be learnt from the man.
King David was like any other human being. He did a lot of good deeds and also did a lot of bad deeds. We can learn from both his good deeds and his bad deeds and the lessons will help live a better life which is beneficial to God and humanity.
King David was a man of grace. Before he became king, he was a shepherd and then a soldier. The anointing on him started to manifest after the Almighty God sent the Prophet Samuel to anoint him as the next king after King Saul.
He saved Israel from the Philistines after fighting and defeating their champion, Goliath. King Saul recruited him and he proved himself several times, fighting in wars and protecting his people.
He was betrayed and marked for death but with God’s help, he was able to overcome. He applied wisdom in many of the things he did. He also committed a lot of atrocities and got punished for them but he was still favored by God.
Here are some of the lessons from King David:
(1) BE CLOSE TO GOD
David was close to God and this is evident in his utterances and even his writings. When you are close to God, there are so many advantages that you will enjoy. God will definitely look out for you whenever you call on him.
For example, when David faced Goliath, he had so much faith in God and he had the confidence. 1 Samuel 17: 45-47(NIV):
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
Before David went to war, he usually sought God’s opinion. He obviously knew that having success without God was going to be difficult.
1 Samuel 23:1-4 9 (NIV):
When David was told, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing floors,” 2 he inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?”
The LORD answered him, “Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.”
3 But David’s men said to him, “Here in Judah we are afraid. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!”
4 Once again David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him, “Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.” 5 So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines and carried off their livestock. He inflicted heavy losses on the Philistines and saved the people of Keilah.
A wonderful lesson to learn from this is that we need to be close to God in order to enjoy Him.
(2) BE NICE TO PEOPLE, YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU MIGHT NEED THEM
King David was a very nice man who was kind to many people and this has helped save his life countless times. An example is when Saul’s dating, Michal saved his life when her father tried to have him killed. Of course they were married but then if he hadn’t been nice to her, she would have helped her father get to him (1 Samuel 19:11-17.
Another example was when David and his men were running away from Absalom and even when he was returning. A lot of people came out to give provisions to David and his people. They could have abandoned him but they didn’t.
(3) BE LOYAL
Loyalty is one of the characteristics of love. David was very loyal and that showed in his relationship with Solomon, King Saul’s son. They both made a promise to make sure that their love to each other extends to their children.
Friendship is deeper than blood. Like Kind David, treasure your friends and be loyal to them.
(4) ACCEPT CRITICISM
King David was a man who didn’t shy away from criticisms. Whenever he is criticized, he feels remorse, accepts his misdeed and tries to make things better.
An example: 2 Samuel chapters 11 and 12 tell us about David and Bathsheba and how David got Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah killed. Then the Prophet Nathan rebuked David for his actions and while another person would have taken offense, David admitted to his wrongful actions and asked God for forgiveness.
(5) FOCUS ON GOD RATHER THAN MEN
It is far better to follow God’s instructions than follow the instructions of men. David was focused on pleasing God rather than men and this showed when David returned the Ark of the Lord to Israel. He danced to praise the Lord without caring about what people might think of his behavior.
2 Samuel 6 shows hoe Michal ridiculed him for dancing anyhow but David didn’t care.
(6) JUDGING BY APPEARANCES IS A BAD IDEA
None of David’s brothers, father or even neighbors could have predicted that David could ever become king. He was a shepherd who was always with the sheep and many people didn’t think much of him.
However, grace sought him out and he turned out to be a very important king and a hero. No one knows tomorrow. Never look down on anyone.
(7) ADULTERY HAS NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES
Everyone who has read a bible knows about David’s adultery with Bathsheba and it has been the subject of many sermons. David slept with Bathsheba, a married woman, and conspired to have her husband killed to have her to himself.
The Lord sent the Prophet Nathan to berate him and he was rightly punished for that.
There are so many other lessons to learn from the life of King David. All you have to do is read up his story and make sure you do everything he did to please God and avoid the things he did that got him into trouble.
