ICMC Commends V.P, Prof. Osibanjo,dr. Ngige & NLC For A Successful Negotiation by TheRareGem1(f): 5:07pm On Sep 28, 2020
The Institute of Chartered Mediators And Conciliators (ICMC) has commended the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN); Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige and leaders of the Nigerian Labour Congress for reaching an agreement leading to the suspension of the strike which was proposed to commence on Monday September 28, 2020.

In a statement made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL) by its president, Chief Emeka J.P. Obegolu, ICMC urged the stakeholders to fulfill their obligations so as to build confidence that can facilitate negotiations in the future.

The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators has been following, with keen interest the recent labour/government faceoff following the hike in petroleum products and electricity tariff.
It will be recalled that, following the increase in the prices of petroleum products and electricity tariff, the Nigerian Labour Congress ordered its members and affiliates to embark on an indefinite strike beginning from Monday 28, September 2020.

The ICMC notes with appreciation that as a result of negotiations facilitated on behalf of the Government by The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo and The Honourable Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige with the leadership of the NLC and Trade Union Congress the outcome eventually led to the suspension of the proposed strike action.

The Institute commends the stakeholders for upholding the overall interest of the Nation in their engagement in good faith negotiation leading to sparing the nation the loss of enormous and very limited human and material resources that ought to be deployed for national development.

ICMC urges the stakeholders to fulfill their respective obligations under the settlement agreement to avoid the relapse of negotiated settlement and also serve as a confidence and trust building gestures from both sides that will lead to a future mutually beneficial engagement.

ICMC, an Institute with the mandate to train professionals and agencies to adopt other alternatives, including negotiation, in resolving disputes applauds the efforts of the Vice President, The Honourable Minister of Labour and Labour leaders for leading a successful negotiation of the impasse between the Federal Government and Labour Unions.
