Labour Protests Kwara Govt’s Refusal To Pay COVID-19 Allowance To Health Workers by owolabi1105: 10:45pm On Sep 28, 2020
The organised labour in Kwara state, on Monday, kicked against the state government’s refusal to pay accrued COVID-19 hazard allowance to frontline health workers.

The state government, in May, announced that medical doctors and other categories of health workers at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 in the state will be paid N25,000 daily.

However, the labour leaders, in a statement jointly signed on September 28 by the state Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Aliyu Issa Ore; the Acting State Chairman of Trade Union Congress, Ezekiel Adegoke; the Chairman Joint Negotiation Council, Saliu Suleiman, threatened industrial action if the governor failed to pay the health workers within 14 days.

The statement read in part, “We condemned in strong term non-payment of COVID-19 allowance to the health workers at the frontline of battle against Covid-19 pandemic in the State.

“We therefore as a matter of urgency urge State Government to appreciate extent of risk these health personnel put their lives and that of the families into, and pay their accrued allowances without any delay.”
