Today (Thursday, October 1, 2020), marks the 60th anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence.

In the last six decades that the country has been in existence, October 1 has been a day set aside for the celebration of freedom from the British government. The day is typically celebrated with fanfare – a lot of introspection into how the year has been and more importantly, hope for a better year.

However, the most populous African country isn’t only a nation that excels only in numbers. But with an abundance of talent, brilliance, and hard work, many Nigerians have been able to cement their iconic status, and at the same time, made a name for themselves far beyond the country’s borders.

From entertainment and art to sport and business, below is a list of some iconic Nigerians who’ve made a mark:

1. Aliko Dangote

Aliko Dangote – Born into a prominent family in the Northern part of Nigeria, the grandson of Alhaji Alhassan Dantata has since had his eye for business since when he was a child. He engaged himself in buying and selling at the early stage of his life and with a startup loan of 5,000:00 (Five thousand Naira only) in 1977 from his uncle, Alhaji Dantata, Dangote established his business, which today has grown to become the Dangote Industries Limited.
