As Nigerians,we are currently struggling to grasp and cope with the bitter issues facing us daily. The issue of police brutality and gross corruption isn't something new to us as a Nigerian, infact it add up to the daily burden we all pass through daily.
With the latest move by the IG banning the special anti robbery squad and other tactical team from routine patrols, many Nigerians are calling for the total disbandment of the outfit. But I don't think this is the best solution to tackle police brutality. In other to tackle police brutality and corruption we need to look at the root of what leads to this mess we presently found ourselves, and try to uproot this evil disaster from the root.
CAUSES OF POLICE CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA
there are 3 major causes of a corrupt police force in Nigeria
1) Activities of corrupt Politicians
2)A compromised recruitment system
3)A failed and decayed Nationwide Structual system
ACTIVITIES OF CORRUPT POLITICIANS
This is the main cause of all ill Nationwide plagues that has befalled Nigeria.A popular proverb says that when you pour a bucket of water on the head, you receive it at the legs.the shower of corruption had so much soaked and drenched Nigeria to the extent that it's very foundations had become swampy and drench with the waters of corruption and Nepotism. One major corrupt activity that makes Nigeria security operatives so ineffective and carry out their evil practices in broad day light without fear is election rigging.
During elections these policemen and security agencies witness and participate in brazen corrupt practices such as ballot snatching, intimidation of political opponents and manipulation of election results.this is where the failed circle of corruption in the police force starts.what these policemen see on that day of the elections remains and dwell forever subcontously in their minds. There is no way a DPO that had just participated in an election malpractice/rigging scheme can fight crime actively and genuinely without been compromised. This flows down to the junior officers, and the seed of a new circle of corruption is planted and ripe for harvest right from the commencement of a new administration. Now imagine this rigging and malpractice plot been schemed from the office of the IG and state police commissioners, you witness a gross Nationwide corruption virus that is been spread among all the police formations and commands accross the 36 states of the nation. You see why policemen collects 50 naira openly on Nigerian roads openly without fear shame or remorse, this is one of the main reasons.
A COMPROMISED RECRUITMENT SYSTEM
Another major cause of a failed security architecture in Nigeria is a recruitment system that's based on corruption and nepotism.what would a young and aspiring recruit into the NPF learn when he has to pay atleast 50k and above to be able to bribe ogas at the top so that his name can be shortlisted into the new batch of police officers,or is most likely recruited based on the recommendation of a popular godfather in the police force. The seed of corruption are planted into these recruits right from day one of the registration process. The SARS and Mopol officers today all passed through this system of systematic corruption.how do you expect them to perform and have respect for the rule of law while having respect for ordinary Nigerians they come accross on the streets? The chances of that happening is quite low.Can you see why Nigeria security system(police included)is decayed and so rotten? corruption and nepotism plays a very huge part in it.Without addressing this issue never expect a better NPF.
A FAILED AND DECAYED NATIONWIDE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
This is the final part of the chain of the cause of a corrupt police force in nigeria.accross Nigeria today, corruption had spread it's tentacles to the very foundations and depth of all key establishments and institution Nationwide. The political, health, judicial, educational, electrical, industrial sectors and all major government parastatals are all compromised. The daily corruption witnessed in Nigeria nationwide coupled with the harsh economy situations, can have an adverse effect on the mental behaviour and of a policeman. That's why a policeman would readily collect the bribe at hand been offered than to loose out because even if they reject the bribe oga on top go collect am and the honest cop loses out.
You see without addressing these three major challanges in Nigeria, never expect anything better from the Nigerian police force and all its security agencies.charity they say begins at home.Geniune transformation must begin from the office of the president and national assembly before any real changes can be felt.Until then,Nigerians would continue to wail and gnash their teeth while living on the fantasy of "e go better

The resignation of the incompetent vegetable dullard will lead to less brutality by policemen. Constant Harassment never happened during Obasanjo and Jonathan but since they know they won't face any repercussions under the sleepy dullard's regime they keep misbehaving.
