Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S21 series next February. Even though that is still a while away, details of the upcoming series have started surfacing. Recent reports have revealed an interesting piece of information about the Samsung Galaxy S21 series battery.

Usually, Samsung SDI is in charge of the batteries found on Samsung’s flagship phones. However, the company sometimes sources for batteries for its flagship phones from multiple suppliers. This time around, reports point at batteries from China.

According to the reports, Samsung’s next S-series flagships will use batteries from China’s ATL (Amperex Technology Limited, New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.). Following the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery incident in 2016, the Korean company had to exclude ATL from its list of premium product line suppliers.

Since the exclusion, ATL has still been supplying batteries for Samsung’s low- and mid-range phones such as the Samsung Galaxy A and Galaxy M series. For its flagship models, Samsung currently mainly uses battery supplies from Samsung SDI and LG Chem. Packaging companies such as ITM Semiconductor are there to ensure battery stability.

Now, if the current reports making the rounds are anything to go by, then ATL is mass-producing batteries for the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. This series is expected to include at least three smartphones – Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus, and Galaxy S21 Ultra with battery capacities of 4,000mAh, 4,800mAh, and 5,000mAh.

ATL will reportedly not be the sole supplier of batteries for the Galaxy S21 series. However, it is not yet clear how Samsung will split the orders. At the end of the day, though, all batteries will still pass through the same verification process, so it may not really matter which is which.
