President Buhari’s declaration and attempt to justify the increment of the price of fuel in Nigeria by comparing it to the N168 per litre price in Saudi Arabia is a senseless and dumb political blunder.

The President, during the 2020 October Ist Independence day speech, among other things, stated that: “In this present circumstances, a sensible Government must take tough decisions and face realities. Petroleum costs in Nigeria need to be adjusted. Nigeria sell now at N161 per litre costs”. He continued;

“A comparison with our neighbouring countries will explain my point; Chad, an oil producing country, is charging N362 per litre, Niger which is also an oil producing country charges 1 litre at N346, Ghana, oil producing country, as well sells N326 per litre. More so, Egypt sells N211 per litre, while Saudi Arabia sells N168 per litre. Thus, there is no sense for fuel to be cheaper in Nigeria than in Saudi Arabia”.

However, there is nothing wrong with comparing, copying or admiring other people or the country’s development and progress. Still, President Buhari’s comparison of Nigeria and Saudi Arabia in this circumstance is totally out of it.

What’s more, through the Minister of Information and Culture, the Federal Government says the comparison made by the President Buhari on fuel prices between Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other countries in his Independence Day 2020 national speech is justified.

In this circumstance, there is a call for concern that Buhari’s comparison and inconsiderate statement suggests that what the country is going through isn’t the first version of a reoccurring circle again but rather the commencement of something new. If Nigeria fails to adjust this mindset, there are chances that we might as a country continue in this system that enables poverty, economic stagnation and insecurity to thrive.
