Bombs kill 10 at PDP rally

Niger State Governor Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu and other top Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officials were lucky yesterday when bombs exploded at the flag-off of the party’s zonal campaign rally in Suleja.

There was an explosion that threw up a huge, thick black smoke and dust. By the time the scene became clear, 10 people lay dead. Twenty were injured.

President Goodluck Jonathan VOWED last night that the perpetrators will not go scot free.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan says that militants in the country's delta or Muslim extremists in the north may have been responsible for a New Year's Eve bombing in Abuja.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack that killed at least four people and wounded 26 others.

"The security people are on it. We will get to the root of the matter. I urge Nigerians to remain calm," Jonathan said during a Saturday morning church service in Abuja, according to Reuters.

Similar violent attacks devastated the OPEC-member nation in recent weeks: On Dec. 24 bombings in central Nigeria and violence between Christian and Muslim youths left at least 80 people dead, while car bomb attacks killed 12 in the capital in October.

Jonathan originally said Friday that Boko Haram, the Islamist sect that claimed responsibility for the Christmas Eve bombings, was responsible for this weekend's attack in Abuja.

But the presidency revised the statement on Saturday, claiming Boko Haram had not at this stage been linked to the bomb, Reuters reports.

"To me they are pure criminals that demons are using these days, not only in Nigeria but also in acts of terrorism across the whole world," Jonathan said.

President Goodluck Jonathan will appoint an Adviser on Terrorism within the next one week while public and private establishments are to be ringed with close circuit television (CCTV) in response to the spate of explosions that have rocked parts of the country.
