The name "Nigeria" was derived by the British colonial administration from "Niger area" which initially was a term used to describe the territories around the river Niger.

The British acquired the territories in 1886 through the Royal Niger Company, which administered them until 1903.

The British formally assumed the effective administration of the territory when Lord Lugard was appointed to oversee the three separate territories: the Lagos Colony, the Southern and Northern Provinces.
