The compulsory aspect which is in line with the state Governments Child Right Act has already commenced across the state.
This was announced by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education matters and Head of the State education Monitoring team- Etubom (Dr.) Jerry J. Emah while addressing parents, schools heads and teachers in the three senatorial district of the state.
Etubom Emah explained that the compulsory education implementation will involve the arrest, reprimanding and possibly prosecution of children of school age found on the streets, farms. Markets or any other public place during school hours i.e between 8.am and 2pm on Mondays to Fridays whether in school uniform or not.
Etubom Emah also announced the opening of students black book in all the police stations and schools in the state where names of perpetual late comers and other records of indiscipline will be recorded for future references.
On hawkers and other children who loiter the street during school hours, Etubom Emah explained that such hawkers will be arrested with their wares and taken to the nearest police station for the eventual arrest and prosecution of their parents, sponsors, guardians or mentors in line with the state's Child Right Act Law.
According to Etubom Emah, the measure will remain in place for the life of this administration until all our streets are cleared of such undesirable elements. In their responses, the parents across the state in Uyo, Ikot Ekpene and Eket senatorial districts strongly commended the state government for the free and compulsory education programme and promised to work with the monitoring team to ensure the success of the programme. They were however unanimous in their request for the recruitment of teachers to meet the increasing number of pupils/ students in schools.
They also requested for the payment of transportation allowance to the monitoring volunteers to assist in motivating them as they have become vital tools in the school system in enhancing quality the parents also demanded for the extension of the ongoing school rehabilitation to the secondary schools in the local government areas of the state.
The meeting which was attended by the Special Assistants to the Governor on Education matters in Eket and Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts and traditional rulers from the state witnessed songs by various schools in the zone and actual brainstorming on areas of resolving the many problems confronting the school system.The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio has directed the implementation of the last phase of the State Free and Compulsory Education in the state. Great idea, bt its not jst abt putting them in classrooms but teaching them. 4example some days are dedicated to grasscutting under d blazing hot sun, task which's surpose to serv as short morning task for offenders. And y r d students forced to go with brooms and cutlass from home?
